The Batavia Muckdogs Bulletin: 06/21

In their first four games of the 2008 New York-Penn League season, the St. Louis Cardinals' affiliate, the Batavia Muckdogs, are 1-3.

The 2008 season definitely did not start the way Manager Mark DeJohn and his Batavia Muckdogs had anticipated.  With a college-heavy lineup, the team stumbled offensively, leading to a sweep at the hands of Auburn.  In the three-game set, the Doubledays pounded the Muckdogs for a combined 17-3 score as Batavia only managed 11 hits in 27 innings.

Batavia finally got on the winning track Friday night by defeating Mahoning Valley 3-2 in 11 innings.

Who's Hot

22nd round draft pick, shortstop Colt Sedbrook is leading the team in hitting after the first four games with a .313 average.  He has hit in three of the four contests this season, including three hits in Friday night's game.

In his first start, former Quad Cities right-hander Thomas Eager allowed only one earned run while striking out five in five innings of work.  Ramon Delgado and Arquimedes Nieto both have hurled four shutout innings with Delgado recording five strikeouts.  Eighth round pick Ryan Kulik pitched three hitless innings in his professional debut.

Who's Not

Jameson Maj was touched for six runs in only four innings of work in his first action of the season.  Hector Cardenas allowed four runs in his only inning of action.

While leading the team the team in at-bats with 17, Beau Riportella has only one hit for a .059 average.  UNLV product Xavier Scruggs is hitting .077 in his first 13 professional at-bats.

The New York-Penn League

With a 1-3 record, the team ranks fourth in the Pinckney division, four games back of leader Auburn.

Batavia is hitting only .143 as a team, last in the 14-team league.  The Muckdogs also rank last in on base percentage and slugging percentage with an anemic .180 line.  With only six runs scored, the team is last in that category as well.

The pitching category is more promising.  The team ranks fourth in the league with an ERA of 3.00.
