The Batavia Muckdogs Bulletin: 06/28/08

The St. Louis Cardinals' New York-Penn League entry won two series this past week, leveling their 2008 record at 5-5. Jon Edwards is leading the way for the offense.

The 2008 Batavia Muckdogs got off to a slow start, being swept in their first series of the season.  But the team has turned things around with two series wins during the week and finishing with a 5-2 record in the last seven games. 

 

Recap

 

After coming slowly out of the chute, the Muckdogs have turned things around. Batavia won its series with Mahoning Valley and Jamestown.  In both match ups, the team took the first two games before coming up short of the sweep. 

 

Batavia won three games by just a run over the past seven games.  Also, they put up their highest offensive total of the season, eight runs, against Jamestown on June 23. 

 

Who's Hot

 

Jon Edwards has hit in six of his eight games, including two games of three hits or more.  On June 23, Edwards had four extra base hits, three doubles and a home run.  Colt Sedbrook leads the team in at-bats and is hitting .324.  The Arizona product has a hit in eight of his ten games.  Jermaine Curtis had three hits in a game twice in his first eight games and brought his average up to .323.

 

Arquimedes Nieto has yet to allow a run in his first two starts covering nine innings.  In nine innings of work, Thomas Eager has struck out 12 and posted an ERA of 2.00.

 

Who's Not

 

Daniel Richardson has struggled with his command, with nine walks in only three innings of relief.  Adam Reifer has an ERA of 12.00 after allowing four earned runs in just three innings of work. 

 

After a big season at UNLV, Xavier Scruggs has really struggled in the early going of professional baseball.  In 32 at-bats, Scruggs has only two hits for an average of .063.  Leadoff hitter Beau Riportella is hitting .167. 

 

New York-Penn League

 

The Muckdogs rank third in the Pinckney division with a 5-5 record, 1.5 games back of leader Jamestown. 

 

With his .393 average, Jon Edwards ranks in a tie for second in the league in hitting and in slugging percentage with a .786 mark.  Jermaine Curtis ranks fifth in the league in slugging percentage at .548 and is tied for second in doubles. 

 

Nieto is tied for first in the League with his ERA of zero.  With his 12 strikeouts, Eager ranks sixth in the league. 

 

The Muckdogs rank eighth in the 14-team league with a .237 average.  The team sits in second with five home runs.

 

With a 2.80 ERA, the team is fifth ranks fifth but last in walks allowed. 

 

Up Next

 

Batavia finishes up a weekend season with Mahoning Valley, a team that it has already defeated three times this year.  Then the team plays an interesting series with Jamestown.  The Muckdogs play the first game on the road then have a home game against the Jammers before finishing the series on the road.  The team will finish the week with a three-game home series with Hudson Valley.
