Gulf Coast League Cardinals Report: 07/06/08

Though in a developmental league, the Gulf Coast League Cardinals would really like to get another victory. The 5-9 team has lost six in a row.

Things are quite dim on the back lots of Roger Dean Stadium.  The GCL team has lost six in a row having been outscored 13-39.  The low point of the week was a 17-3 shelling at the hands of the Nationals.  The Cardinals could be pulling closer to the win column with one run defeats in its last two games.

Who's Hot

Shortstop Luis Mateo has hit in eight of his last ten games for a .343 clip.  In his first seven games as a profession, Michael Swinson has three multi-hit games and is batting .308 with four stolen bases.

Miguel Flores hurled five scoreless during the week including a four-inning of hitless ball on the Fourth of July. Jose Calero has hurled 5.1 shutout innings so far this season.  On Saturday, Kevin Siegrist hurled four shutout innings while allowing only one hit.

Who's Not

During the recent six-game losing streak, outfielders Ryde Rodriguez and Rainel Rosario have both been really struggling.  The 20-year-old Rodriguez is hitting .188 while Rosario is below .100 during the streak.  Ted Obregon has the third most at bats on the team but is hitting an anemic .077 this season.  Joe Babrick has struck out 12 times in 23 at bats.

Jose Rada has given up seven runs in his last nine innings.  Christian Concepcion has been tagged for five runs in his last 1.1 innings of relief.

Gulf Coast League

With a record of 5-9, the Cardinals are tied for last place, seven games behind the East Division leader Dodgers.

Michael Swinson is tied for ninth in the league in stolen bases.

Omar Javier ranks second in innings pitched, 17.

Zach Russell ranks third in most walks allowed, nine.

Of the 16 teams, the Cardinals rank 12th in batting average, 11th in on base percentage, and 11th in slugging.  The team's 5.71 ERA ranks next to last as does the Cardinals walks allowed and WHIP.

On the Move

Carlos Pupo ranked among the league leaders in the power categories before being sent to the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Midwest League.
