The Batavia Muckdogs Bulletin: 07/12/08

The St. Louis Cardinals' New York-Penn League club had another winning week, remaining in second place in their division. Catcher Blake Murphy is bringing home runs.



The Batavia Muckdogs ended the week with two victories to finish the week with a 4-3 mark.  Batavia started the week with a win to sweep Hudson Valley before it lost a three game series with Vermont.  The Muckdogs then took two of three from a talented Lowell team to finish the week above .500. 


Who's Hot


Arquimedes Nieto has posted an a microscopic 0.90 ERA in 20 innings.  Ramon Delgado hurled eight innings of one run baseball during the week.  Adam Riefer now has five saves but his ERA is still above six. Jason Buursma has yet to allow an earned run in 9.1 innings.  Scott Gorgen now has 17 strikeouts in only 12 innings.


Outfielder Shane Peterson is hitting .464 over his last nine games.  Frederick Parejo has put together a six game hitting streak (.385).  Second baseman Jose Garcia also has a six game hitting streak (.391).  Catcher Blake Murphy has driven in nine runs in his last 10 games.  After a slow start, catcher Charlie Cutler has put together a five game hit streak (.353). 


Who's Not


Left-hander Hector Cardenas was tagged for three runs in only a third of an inning in his last appearance.  Daniel Richardson had an outing in which he allowed four earned runs in a third of an inning but bounced back for a shutout inning in his next outing.  Lefty George Brown has allowed five earned runs in his last five innings. 


After a red-hot start, outfielder Jon Edwards is batting only .153 over his last four games.  Shortstop Colt Sedbrook is really struggling, hitting only .114 in his last ten games. 


Who's On the Move


Reliever LaCurtis Mayes made the move from Johnson City and gave up two unearned runs in his only appearance to date.  Infielder Domnit Bolivar struggled with consistency at the Quad Cities so he will receive a second chance with Batavia. 


New York-Penn League


With a record of 13-11, the Muckdogs are tied for second place, four games behind first place Jamestown. 


Shane Peterson ranks first in the league in on base percentage and fourth in the league in batting.  Jon Edwards ranks first in slugging, fifth in on base percentage, and fifth in home runs.  Jose Garcia is sixth in runs and fifth in stolen bases. 


Nieto's ERA is the fourth best in the league while Adam Reifer ranks fourth in the league in saves. 


The team ERA of 3.37 is the sixth best while Batavia is tied for fifth in saves. 


The Muckdogs rank as the top on base percentage club in the league and second in batting average.  Batavia is second in slugging, hits, and third in home runs. 


The team ranks next to last in attendance with an average of just over 1,400 fans.


Up Next


The Muckdogs will start a three game series with Aberdeen before hitting the road to play in one of the most picturesque setting in all of the minors at Staten Island.  Look for a possible promotion for the hot hitting Shane Peterson.
