Now 20 years old and in his third professional season, Edwards still remains in short-season ball, still working to put his game completely together. He is back to start the season with the New York-Penn League Batavia Muckdogs, where he was promoted late in the 2007 season.
Tall and powerful, with a solid batting eye, good speed and a strong arm, Edwards has stepped up his game in 2008. Coming into Wednesday's action, through basically the first month of the season, his line is an impressive .300/.424/.586 (BA/OBP/SLG). That slugging mark is fourth-best in the league.
Continuing his past history, our 25th-ranked Cardinals prospect coming into the season leads the Muckdogs in both strikeouts (28) and walks (tied at 13). His total of four home runs is double that of any other Batavia player.
After taking batting practice in 90 degree heat on Wednesday, Edwards headed for the Muckdogs' dugout for some individual counseling from Manager Mark DeJohn, who had just thrown BP.
I caught up with Edwards for this audio interview right afterward.
