The Memphis Redbirds Report: 07/29/08

The St. Louis Cardinals Triple-A club is playing .500 ball, but John Wasdin and David Freese are hot.

Recap

Memphis is 5-5 in their last 10 games and has won two straight. The Redbirds have struggled with consistency since the All-Star break and haven't been able to string many wins together. For every game they win, they lose one, too.

Who's Hot

David Freese is on fire. There's no other way to put it. Freese has six extra-base hits with 10 RBIs in his last five games. The third baseman has hit a grand slam and a three-run homer in the last two games. During the month of July, Freese is hitting .388 with six home runs and 23 RBIs, helping to raise his average to .295 on the season.

Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week John Wasdin has been nearly unhittable in his last two starts. Wasdin has allowed just one run on five hits in his last 13 innings pitched. Out of the bullpen, Jason Motte has been mowing batters down. Motte has 17 strikeouts in his last six outings and has not allowed a run in his last five appearances.

Who's Not

Jarrett Hoffpauir has struggled at the plate recently. In his last seven games, Hoffpauir is only 2-for-23 at the dish.

The Memphis bullpen ran into a bit of trouble Saturday against Tacoma. Chris Perez gave up five runs, four in the ninth, before being replaced by Mark Worrell, who surrendered two more runs. Finally, Ron Flores entered the game and gave up one run. When all was said and done, the bullpen had thrown away a seven-run lead in the top of the ninth.

Who's on the Move

Outfielder Joe Mather was recalled by St. Louis last Tuesday. On Thursday, Colby Rasmus was placed on the disabled list and Cody Haerther was transferred back to Memphis from Springfield.

Anthony Reyes is no longer a member of the St. Louis organization after being traded to Cleveland Saturday.

Monday, shortstop Tyler Greene was transferred from Springfield to replace Brian Barden in the lineup. Barden left to play for Team USA in the Beijing Olympics. Also on Monday, Nick Stavinoha was called up by the Cardinals.

PCL

With a record of 60-49, the Redbirds are four games behind Iowa for first place in the American Northern Division. Memphis has the fifth-best record in the entire PCL.

Josh Phelps is currently tied for ninth in the PCL with 20 home runs, while his 73 RBIs are also the ninth-best total.

Up Next

The Redbirds finish a four-game series with Tacoma Tuesday before hitting the road for eight straight. Memphis first travels to Fresno and then heads to Sacramento. The Redbirds then return home for eight more games.
