Gulf Coast League Cardinals Report: 07/27/08

Another ugly week for the boys in Florida, as they went 2-4 to close with a 12-19 last-place record in the GCL East.

To start the week, the Gulf Coast League Cardinals were swept in a doubleheader to extend their losing streak to six games.  Next, the team took wins from the Dodgers and Marlins for a modest two-game winning streak.  It did not last long, as the Cards ended the week with two more defeats.

Who's Hot

Outfielder Ryde Rodriguez hit .467 over the week with five RBIs.  The 20-year-old has his average up to .326.  Outfielder Devin Shepherd is hitting .323 in his last 10 games.  Miguel Flores has 16 strikeouts compared to only four walks.

Who's Not

After getting off to a red-hot start, infielder Braulio Hiraldo has only one hit in his last 16 at bats.  Outfielder Rainel Rosario was leading the team in most offensive categories but his bat has slowed, he is now on a 3-for-20 stretch. Outfielder Michael Swinson has not had a hit in his last 13 at bats.

Jose Rada has been touched for five runs in his last seven innings.  In his last start, Eric Fornataro allowed four runs in four innings.

Gulf Coast League

With a record of 12-19, the Cardinals are in last place in the East Division.

Despite his recent struggles, Rosario is reaching base at a .418 clip, ninth best in the league.  Rosario ranks second in the league in hits, fifth in doubles, and ninth in home runs.

Shortstop Luis Mateo is ranked fifth in RBIs, seventh in hits, and ninth in runs.  Ryde Rodriguez is tied for sixth in runs batted in.

The Cardinals are 11th in the league in team batting and sixth in on base percentage and slugging.  On the pitching side, the team is dead last with a 5.29 ERA.  The Cards are next to last in walks allowed and WHIP.

Up Next

The Cardinals will try to right the ship by hosting the Dodgers and the Marlins.  The team will then travel to face the Nationals and then come back home against the Mets and the Dodgers.
