This article covers the week ending Saturday, August 16.
One of the few pitching prospects at the upper level of the Cardinals system yet to make his MLB debut is reliever Jason Motte. In the thread "Motte – Strikeout King", "SoonerinNC" looked at various pitching rankings in the Cardinals minor league system. Not surprisingly, Motte has the best strikeout rate.
Arguably the biggest news in the Cardinal Nation last week was the return of ace pitcher Chris Carpenter to the disabled list. "PhillyRooster" considered the results of three other starters, one of whom might lose their job when Carpenter does come back, Braden Looper, Kyle Lohse and Todd Wellemeyer, in the thread, "Carpenter's Effect on the Rotation". In a later post, he also explained why Joel Pineiro was excluded from the analysis.
Another Carpenter-related thread is "Carpenter back to the DL". Two regulars, "Jmodene1" and "Oquendo11", each offered strong posts. "Jmodene1" looked at the Cardinals rotation in the context of their upcoming days off, while Jose's namesake extended the idea, looking at four different starting pitching scenarios for the rest of the regular season.
With the Cardinals playing the Reds this past weekend, it provided a reminder of the new employer of general manager Walt Jocketty. One step further would be to speculate as to his choice for field manager. "MagnoliaCardFan" posed the question, "Will Tony and Dave be in Cincinnati in 2009?", backing it with lists of pros and cons. This generated a good discussion among a number of posters.
In recognition of that post, "MagnoliaCardFan" is our winner of the "Post of the Week". He collects a free four-week subscription to stlcardinals.scout.com and all the other great sites in the Scout.com network.
Next week, it can be you! So, keep posting!
