Game Played Monday

Batavia (SS) – Lost to Lowell 4-3

New York – Penn League Playoffs Game 1

With a one run lead and one of the New York-Penn League's top closers on the mound, the Muckdogs looked like it was about to take a one game lead in the best-of-three series with the Lowell Spinners.

But, Will Middlebrooks would homer off of All-Star closer Adam Reifer in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at three runs apiece. The score would stay knotted until the bottom of the 12th when strategy would backfire on Batavia.

With Zachary Pitts on the mound, Lowell's Ricardo Burgos led off the inning with a double. Burgos would advance to third on a sac bunt. To set up the double play, the "Dogs" would choose to intentionally walk Middlebrooks. Kade Koewen would fly out to right field but not deep enough to score Burgos. With two outs, Pitts intentially walked bonus-baby Casey Kelley.

With the bases loaded, Ryan Dent worked Pitts for a walk and a one game lead in the series for Lowell.

The Spinners would score one run off of starter Hector Cardenas but then he would then settle in and stifle the Lowell hitters. During one stretch the southpaw would retire 11 straight.

The Muckdogs got on the board in the top of the sixth when Edwin Gomez led of the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Colt Sedbrook singled to score Gomez. Charlie Cutler reached on a botched fielder ‘s choice advancing Sedbrook to second. Both Sedbrook and Cutler would advance on another wild pitch and Jemaine Curtis reached base on a hit-by-pitch. Shane Peterson drew a walk to score Sedbrook. Chris Swauger hit into a force out that scored Cutler and gave Batavia a 3-to-1 lead.

Lowell would score a run in the bottom of the eighth that was charged to reliever Ramon Delgado.

Cardenas finished with 10 strikeouts in six innings of work. Gomez singled twice to go along with his leadoff double in the sixth. Cutler reached base twice with a double and a walk.
