The Cardinals Minor League Notebook 09/11

The Muckdogs rode a strong performance from starter Adam Veres to advance to the New York-Penn League Finals.

Games Played Wednesday

Batavia Muckdogs (SS) - Defeats Lowell 3-2

Starter Adam Veres was spectacular for the Muckdogs in the final game of the three-game playoff. Veres allowed only one run on two hits in seven innings while striking out seven. In none of his previous six starts for Batavia had he lasted that many innings nor had he allowed that few of hits. The 49th round pick had a stretch in which he recorded 15 of 16 batters.

Ramon Delgado was credited with his second hold of the series by striking out the side in the eighth. Adam Reifer got the final three outs in an eventful night to get the save.

With the score tied at one in the bottom of the fourth, outfielder Chris Swauger led off the inning by reaching first on an error. Frederick Parejo singled to advance Swauger to third and he would score on a Xavier Scruggs' sacrifice fly. Jose Garcia would then single to advance Parejo and set up the hot-hitting Colt Sedbrook. Pitcher Bryan Price would throw a wild pitch to advance both Parejo and Garcia into scoring position. With the table set for Sedbrook, Spinners' catcher Tim Federowicz allowed a passed ball that allowed Parejo to score. Price would eventually get out of the inning without any more runs scoring but the damage had been done.

Parejo and Garcia paced the offense with two hits. Garcia drove in a run as well. Shane Peterson singled and stole a base.

With the victory, Batavia advances to face Pinckney Division nemesis Jamestown in the finals. The Muckdogs finished the season 4-6 against the Jammers including being swept by Jamestown last week. In those two games, Batavia was outscored by a 20-6 margin.
