The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 10/01

Three players hit the field in Hawaii as St. Louis Cardinals prospects prepare to play winter ball all over the globe.

Hawaii Winter League


Tony Cruz: Started at catcher and batted sixth.  Went 4-for-6 with three doubles, two RBIs (one w/two-outs), and one run. (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 2) Behind the plate, he allowed two passed balls.


Jim Rapoport: Started in centerfield and batted eighth. Went 2-for-5 with one run, one walk, one stolen base, and two strikeouts (both swinging). (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1)


Blake King: Entered in the seventh and pitched 1.2 innings.  Allowed two hits, one (earned) run, walking three (one intentional), and striking out one. (Pitches-strikes: 40-19) (ground out-fly out: 3-1) (inherited runners-scored: 2-0)


North Shore beat Honolulu 11-10 in 10 innings: link


Honolulu Sharks fall to 2-1, but still first in the East Division.

The Sharks will again take on North Shore on Wednesday @ 3:00pm HT

Instructional League

Players scheduled to participate: Brad Furnish, Tyler Norrick, Justin Fiske, Adam Ottavino, Steven Hill (taxi squad), Tyler Greene, Brett Wallace, and Shane Robinson.


Mexican Pacific League

Begins play October 11


Players expected to partipate: Francisco Rivera and Jason Motte (tentative)


Venezuelan League

Begins play October 14


Exhibition play begins at the end of the week for the league.


Aguilas del Zulia announced that former VSL Cardinals infielder Marcos Chavez will be playing for the team during the 2008-09 season.  He appeared in the Venezuelan Summer League from 2006-07 for the Cardinals squad and was later released.


Others participating: David Freese, Jose Martinez, Luke Gregerson, Ron Flores (free agent), Geney Rios, and Carlos Oraa.


Venezuelan Parallel League

Begins play mid-October


Numerous Cardinals' prospects expected to participate.


Dominican League

Begins play October 15.


MLB has officially awarded 'custody' of Amaury Marti to the Licey de Tigres of the Dominican League: link


After the 2008 Triple-A Mexican League season ended, Marti had signed a contract to play with Algodoneros de Guasave of the Mexican Pacific League, but things unraveled in the following weeks forcing the Cardinals organization to step in.


D'Angelo Jimenez did a short interview with Tigres de Licey team reporters: link 


He talks about his disappointment in how his 2008 season turned out and how excited he is to be returning to Licey to help defend the Caribbean Sreies title for the 2008-09 season.


Colombian League

Begins play October 24


Players tentatively expected to participate: Casey Mulligan, Nick Derba, Davis Bilardello, Carlos Pupo, and Casey Rowlett.


Nicaraguan League

Begins play late-October


Players expected to participate: TBD


Puerto Rican League

Begins play November 6


Players tentatively expected to participate: Yadier Molina (injury may preclude) and Juan Gonzalez (free agent, invite in the mail)
