The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 10/04

Quad Cities' Francisco Rivera launches a grand slam in Mexico as more St. Louis Cardinals prospects suit up in winter ball action.

Hawaii Winter League


Jim Rapoport (Springfield): Started in LF and batted 7th.  1-for-4 with 1 two-out RBI, 1 Run, and 1 walk (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 3). He also had one outfield assist.  Rapoport has now fallen into third place in the league in batting average.


Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Starting catcher and batted 8th.  1-for-5 with 2 RBIs, 1 run, and two strikeouts (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1). Behind the plate, he caught one base runner stealing and assisted in one double play.

The Sharks are now 4-1-1 and have the best overall record in the Hawaii Winter League. 


West Oahu visits Honolulu Saturday night at 7:00 pm HT.


Instructional League

Venezuelan League

Begins play October 14.


Ex-Springfield Cardinals infielder Juan Lucena is listed on the Tigres de Aragua roster for this winter.  He was released during 2008 spring training.


Players expected to participate: Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent), David Freese (Memphis), Jose Martinez (Springfield), Luke Gregerson (Springfield), Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent), Geney Rios (VSL), and Carlos Oraa (VSL).


Venezuelan Parallel League

Begins play mid-October.


Numerous Cardinals' prospects expected to participate.


Dominican League

Begins play October 15.


Players expected to participate: Amaury Marti (Memphis) and D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent).


Colombian League

Begins play October 24.
