Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities) did not make the opening day lineup for Tomateros de Culiacan.

Also tentatively expected to participate: Jason Motte (St. Louis).

Venezuelan League

Begins play October 14.

Mark Worrell (Memphis) has been added to the list, expected to play for Aguilas del Zulia with Geney Rios (VSL) and Carlos Oraa (VSL).  This past season, Worrell made 53 relief appearances posting a 3-3 record, 2.15 ERA, and earned five saves.  He was also called up to the big leagues where he posted an 0-1 record and 7.94 ERA in four games, and even hit his first major league home run.  Last winter, he spent the regular season with Tigres de Licey in the Dominican and pitched until the team entered the playoffs.

Other expected to play: David Freese (Memphis), Jose Martinez (Springfield), Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent), Luke Gregerson (Springfield), and Ron Flores (Memphis-free agnet).

Venezuelan Parallel League

Begins play mid-October.

Numerous Cardinals' prospects expected to play.

Dominican League

Begins play October 15.

Amaury Marti (Memphis) sat down for a short interview with a Tigres de Licey beat writer: link

Something I learned from the interview is that Marti played for Elmira Pioneers in the independent Can Am League in 2005.  His stats, listed under the name 'Amaury Casana': link

The team left the Can Am League for the amateur NY Collegiate League in 2006.

Joining Marti on the Licey roster will be ex-Cardinal players Timo Perez and Ronnie Belliard.

Luis Perdomo (Springfield) is another name recently added to pitch in DWL, for Las Aguilas Cibaenas.  After joining the Cardinals organization from the Cleveland Indians via the Anthony Reyes trade, he made 15 appearances, posting a 2-2 record, 4.50 ERA, and earned one save.

Also participating: D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent).

Colombian League

Begins play October 24.

Pete Parise (Palm Beach) will be taking Shawn Garceau's spot in the league, pitching for the Toros de Sincelejo.  Parise made 47 appearances posting a 5-2 record, 2.24 ERA, and earning 13 saves covering both Single-A Quad Cities and A-Advanced Palm Beach in 2008.

Also expected to participate: Casey Mulligan (Palm Beach), Nick Derba (Palm Beach), Davis Bilardello (Palm Beach), and Carlos Pupo (Quad Cities).

Nicaraguan League

The League has suspended operations for the 2008-09 winter season due to financial problems, similar to what kept Puerto Rico out in 2007-08.  I'm told that only two of the four teams in the league had enough funds to play this fall.  They have decided to cancel the season and regroup for the 2009-10 period.  Their main concentration during their down time will be on the youth, as they have received considerable attention with the July 2, 2008 signing of Jose Francisco Valdivia by the Seattle Mariners.

Puerto Rican League

Begins play November 6.

Players tentatively expected to play: Yadier Molina (St. Louis-injury may prelude) and Juan Gonzalez (Memphis-free agent).
