The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 10/09

Tyler Greene made his Arizona Fall League debut at second base as six St. Louis Cardinals prospects played in winter ball action on Wednesday.

Hawaii Winter League


Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Started at catcher and batted 6th.  1-for-3 with one double, one RBI, and one strike out.


Honolulu beat Waikiki 3-1 in 7 innings: link

The Sharks are now 6-3-1 and hold first place in the East Division.


Tyler Herron (Palm Beach) is expected to make his debut start Thursday vs. Waikiki @ 3:00pm HT.


Also participating: Jim Rapoport (Springfield) and Blake King (Palm Beach).


Arizona Fall League


Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started at 2B and batted 3rd.  1-for-4 with one RBI and one run.


Brett Wallace (Springfield): Started at 3B and batted 4th.  0-for-4 with one RBI, one run, one hit by pitch, and one strike out. (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1)


Steven Hill (Palm Beach-taxi squad) Started in LF and batted 5th.  1-for-4 with one double, one RBI, one run, one sac fly, and one strike out. He also had one fielding error on a ground ball in the 2nd inning.  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 2)

Adam Ottavino (Springfield): Started and pitched 2 innings.  He allowed five hits and three (earned) runs. (pitches-strikes: 42-28) (ground out-fly out: 2-4)


Brad Furnish (Springfield): Followed Ottavino and pitched 2 innings.  He allowed two hits, two (earned) runs, walked two, and struck out one while blowing a save opportunity.  (pitches-strikes: 37-20) (ground out-fly out: 1-4)


The Peoria Saguaros came back to beat Scottsdale 10-7: link

The Saguaros are now 2-0 and take over first place in the American Division after Mesa lost Wednesday.

Mexican Pacific League

Begins play October 10.


Players expected to participate: Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities) and Jason Motte (St. Louis - tentative).


Venezuelan League

Begins play October 14.


Reynier Gonzalez (Johnson City) is in Tigres de Aragua camp working to become an important part of the team's bullpen: link


Gonzalez spent all the 2008 season at Short-Season Rookie Level Johnson City, making 14 appearances (nine starts) posting a 2-3 record, 4.36 ERA, and earning one save.  Last winter he pitched in the Venezuelan Parallel League for Aragua.


Luke Gregerson (Springfield) and Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent) are expected to join Bravos de Margarita on Wednesday October 15, according to the team's official site.


Other players expected to participate: David Freese (Memphis), Jose Martinez (Springfield), Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent), Mark Worrell (Memphis), Geney Rios (VSL), and Carlos Oraa (VSL).


Venezuelan Parallel League

Begins play mid-October.


Numerous Cardinals' prospects expected to play.


Dominican League

Begins play October 15.


Ex-Memphis Redbird Tagg Bozied will be joining Toros del Este for the winter season.

Nicaraguan League

Begins play November 6.


Players expected to play: Yadier Molina (St. Louis-injury may prelude) and Juan Gonzalez (Memphis-free agent).
