The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 10/11

In Hawaii, first baseman Tony Cruz went 3-for-4 with two doubles as five St. Louis Cardinals prospects played in winter ball action on Friday.

Hawaii Winter League


Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Started at 1B and batted 4th.  3-for-4 with two doubles, one two-out RBI, one run, and one walk.  He had one unassisted double play and assisted in another.


Jim Rapoport (Springfield): Started in RF and batted 8th.  2-for-3 with two runs, one walk, and one strikeout.


Honolulu beat North Shore 10-4: link


The Sharks improve to 8-3-1 and hold a small margin over Waikiki in the East Division.


North Shore visits Honolulu Saturday @ 7:00pm HT.


Also participating: Blake King (Palm Beach) and Tyler Herron (Palm Beach).


Instructional League

Arizona Fall League


Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in CF and batted leadoff.  0-for-2 with three runs, three walks, two stolen bases, and one strikeout.


Brett Wallace (Springfield): Started at 3B and batted 6th.  0-for-4 with three strikeouts. (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 3)


Tyler Norrick (Palm Beach): Entered in the 5th and pitched 1.2 innings.  Allowed four hits, three unearned runs, one home run, and struck out three while blowing the save. (pitches-strikes: 36-23) (ground out-fly out: 1-1)


Peoria Saguaros beat Peoria Javelinas 7-5: link

With this win the Saguaros improve to 4-0 and have the best record in the AFL overall.

Mexican Pacific League


Ex-Cardinals prospect Reid Gorecki, currently in the Atlanta Braves system, is playing for Mayos de Navojoa.


Ex-Springfield Cardinal and independent Atlantic League Player of the Year for 2008, Josh Pressley is playing for Yaquis de Obregon.


Former Cardinals' closer Juan Acevedo is pitching for Aguilas de Mexicali.


Hugo Castellano (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the 9th, following Andy Cavazos, and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit, no runs, and struck out one. (ground out-fly out: 1-0).


Obregon lost to Navojoa 13-11: link


Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities) is on the Tomateros de Culiacan roster as they open the winter season Saturday vs. Mazatlan @ 6:00pm MDT.


Jason Motte (St. Louis) was tentatively listed as a member of Naranjeros de Hermosillo, but he is not listed on the MLB site roster.


Venezuelan League

Begins play October 14.


David Freese (Memphis), newly-granted free agent Rico Washington (Memphis), and Ex-Memphis Redbird Mike Smith have joined the Caribes de Anzoategui for practices: link

Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent) has arrived in Margarita and will join the team on Saturday, according to the Bravos de Margarita official site.


Cardinals' prospects tentatively expected to participate: Jose Martinez (Springfield), Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent), Mark Worrell (Memphis), Geney Rios (VSL), Carlos Oraa (VSL), Luke Gregerson (Springfield), and Reynier Gonzalez (Johnson City).


Venezuelan Parallel League

Cardinals open play October 14 at Bravos de Margarita.


Numerous Cardinals' prospects expected to play.


Dominican League

Begins play October 15.


Kelvin Jimenez (St. Louis) will be joining the Estellas Orientales for the winter season.  Jimenez was the Memphis Redbirds team leader in saves with 12, and posted a 1-6 record with a 2.92 ERA.  He also pitched for the big league club during the season, including a September call-up, where he had a 5.63 ERA in 24 innings.


Ex-Memphis Redbird Vladimir Nunez, currently in the Atlanta Braves system, will also be pitching for Estrellas Orientales.


Other Cardinals prospects tentatively expected to play: Amaury Marti (Memphis), Luis Perdomo (Springfield), and D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent).


Colombian League

Begins play October 24.


Players tentatively expected to play: Davis Bilardello (Palm Beach), Nick Derba (Palm Beach), Casey Mulligan (Palm Beach), Pete Parise (Palm Beach), and Carlos Pupo (Quad Cities).


Puerto Rican League

Begins play November 6.


Players tentatively expected to play: Yadier Molina (St. Louis-injury may prelude) and Juan Gonzalez (Memphis-free agent).
