The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 10/12

Brad Furnish spins a shutout inning in Arizona as five St. Louis Cardinals prospects played in winter ball action on Saturday.

Hawaii Winter League


Jim Rapoport (Springfield): Started in CF and batted 2nd.  0-for-3 with one run, one walk, one stolen base, and two strikeouts.


Blake King (Palm Beach): Entered in the 7th and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit and no runs.  (pitches-strikes:11-8)(ground out-fly out:2-1).


Honolulu beat North Shore 5-0: link


The Sharks improve to 9-3-1 and have the best record in HWL play.


North Shore visits Honolulu Sunday @ 1:00pm HT.

Arizona Fall League


The AFL will hold its 2nd annual Pat Tillman Foundation Benefit Saturday November 1. For more information: link


Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started at SS and batted 2nd.  0-for-2 with two walks, one hit by pitch, and one strikeout.  He assisted in one double play and committed one fielding error.  His error occurred with no outs and later turned into a run, in the 1st inning.


Steven Hill (Palm Beach-taxi squad): Started as DH and batted 8th.  1-for-3 with 1 RBI, one sac fly, and one strikeout.


Brad Furnish (Springfield): Entered in the 3rd and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit, no runs, struck out one, and picked a runner off first base. (pitches-strikes: 17-10) (ground out-fly out: 1-0)


Peoria Saguaros came from behind in the late innings to beat Peoria Javelinas 5-2: link

The Saguaros are 5-0 and have a two game lead over the second place team in the league.


The entire AFL takes the day off on Sunday, Surprise visits the Peoria Saguaros Monday @ 12:35pm MST.

Mexican Pacific League


Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Did not play.

Veracruz Instructional League (Mexico)

Opened play October 10.


Former Memphis Redbirds 2003 Rule 5 draftee Rayner Laya is playing for Toros de Soledad.  He was released by the St. Louis Cardinals' organization before 2007 spring camps.


Venezuelan League

Begins play October 14.


Players tentatively expected to play: David Freese (Memphis), Rico Washington (Memphis-free agent), Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent), Jose Martinez (Springfield), Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent), Mark Worrell (Memphis), Geney Rios (VSL), Carlos Oraa (VSL), and Reynier Gonzalez (Johnson City).


Venezuelan Parallel League

Cardinals open play October 14 at Bravos de Margarita.


Numerous Cardinals' prospects expected to play.


Dominican League

Begins play October 15.


The Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League decided to join the Dominican League during their preseason exhibition period.


Ex-Cardinal and current New York Mets' outfielder Fernando Tatis may play for Estrellas Orientales if his injury, sustained at the end of the 2008 season, heals well enough.


Cardinals' prospects expected to play: Kelvin Jimenez (St. Louis), Amaury Marti (Memphis), Luis Perdomo (Springfield), and D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent).


Colombian League

Begins play Ocotber 24.


Players tentatively expected to play: Davis Bilardello (Palm Beach), Nick Derba (Palm Beach), Casey Mulligan (Palm Beach), Pete Parise (Palm Beach), Carlos Pupo (Quad Cities) and Casey Rowlett (Springfield).


Puerto Rican League

Begins play November 6.


Practices will begin October 27, only a week before opening play, due to the financial troubles surrounding the league: link


Players tentatively expected to play: Yadier Molina (St. Louis-injury may prelude) and Juan Gonzalez (Memphis-free agent).
