The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 10/16

David Freese doubled in his first Venezuelan game on Wednesday, headlining a growing number of St. Louis Cardinals prospects playing in winter ball.

Hawaii Winter League

 

Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Started as catcher and batted 4th.  0-for-3 at the plate.  Had a throwing error in the fourth inning on a base stealing attempt on second base, resulting in the runner advancing to third base but not scoring.  He also threw out two runners, one in the second inning and sixth.


Honolulu lost to West Oahu 7-2 in 7 innings: link

The Sharks fall to 10-4-1 and still hold the best record in HWL.

Arizona Fall League

 

Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in center field and batted lead off.  1-for-4 at the plate.

 

Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started at second base and batted 5th.  1-for-4 with one run scored.  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 2)

 

Brett Wallace (Springfield): Started at third base and batted 6th.  0-for-3 with one strikeout (looking).

 

Steven Hill (Palm Beach): Started at catcher and batted 7th.  0-for-2 with one intentional walk.  There were two stolen bases on him while behind the plate.  He was lifted in the eighth inning.

 

Tyler Norrick (Palm Beach): Entered in the fourth and pitched 2 innings.  Allowed one hit, one earned run, walked two, and struck out one.  (pitches-strikes: 42-23) (ground out-fly out: 3-2)

 

Peoria Saguaros scored two in the 7th and held off Phoenix for a 3-2 win: link

The Saguaros improve to 7-1 and have a three-game lead over the overall second-place teams in the league.

Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the 7th and got the final two outs of the inning.  Allowed no hits or runs, walked one, and struck out one for the hold.  (ground out-fly out: 0-1).

 

Luke Gregerson (Springfield): Had not joined Margarita.

 

Margarita scored the only run of the game in the 1st inning, beating Lara 1-0: link

 

Jose Martinez (Springfield): Started at shortstop and batted 2nd.  0-for-4 with two strikeouts (looking and swinging).  He had a throwing error in the third inning that didn't finish off a double play and that same runner scored later in the inning.

 

Jose Rada (GCL): Entered in the ninth inning and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit and no runs.  (ground out-fly out: 0-3)

 

Mark Worrell (Memphis): Did not pitch for Zulia, and is not listed on the roster at this time.

Rico Washington (Memphis-free agent): Started in left field and batted 4th.  1-for-4 with one two-out RBI and one strikeout (swinging).

 

David Freese (Memphis): Started at third base and batted 7th.  1-for-4 with one double and one strikeout (swinging).  He had one throwing error in the fifth inning, runner was caught stealing later in inning.

 

Caribes scored two in the 8th to beat Caracas 4-2: link

Luke Gregerson (Springfield): Pitched and picked up the win for Margarita.

Weather has caused the Cardinals and other league teams games to be suspended at this time.

Cardinals off Thursday, Pittsburgh Pirates visit Friday.

A partial roster of the Tigres de Aragua team has been released which includes: Ruben Alvarado (VSL), Deimer Bier (VSL), Jose Calero (GCL), Omar Diaz (GCL), Reynier Gonzalez (Johnson City), Pablo Ortiz (GCL), Jorge Rondon (Quad Cities), Eduardo Sanchez (Quad Cities), Ismael Cardona (Batavia), and Jesus Montero (VSL).  Infielders and outfielders are not listed yet.  This looks to be a mixed team wth Cardinals, Twins, Angels, and Rangers prospects.

Kevin Moscatel (GCL): Started as designated hitter and batted 7th.  0-for-2 at the plate.
