The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 10/18

Shane Robinson had a home run and four RBI in Arizona, headlining Friday St. Louis Cardinals prospects news in winter ball.

Hawaii Winter League


Jim Rapoport (Springfield): Started in center field and batted 7th.  0-for-3 with two strikeouts (foul tip and swinging).


Tyler Herron (Palm Beach): Entered in the 5th and pitched two innings.  Allowed two hits, no runs, walked one and struck out one.  (pitches-strikes: 38-22) (ground out-fly out :3-1)


Blake King (Palm Beach): Entered in the seventh and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit, one earned run, and walked one.  (pitches-strikes: 21-11) (ground out-fly out: 2-1) (inherited runners-scored: 2-2)

The Sharks fall to 11-5-1 and have a three-game lead over the second-best team in the league.

Arizona Fall League


Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  2-for-4 with one home run, four RBIs, two runs scored, reached base on an error in the fourth, and struck out once (swinging).  He committed two fielding errors.

Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started as designated hitter and batted 6th.  0-for-4 with one run, one walk, three strikeouts (two-swinging, one-looking), and grounded into one double play.  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1)


Brett Wallace (Springfield): Started at third base and batted 7th.  1-for-4 with one home run, one RBI, one run scored, and struck out twice (swinging and looking).


Brad Furnish (Springfield): Entered in the fourth and was roughed up.  Pitched to seven batters allowing six hits, seven earned runs, and one walk, getting no outs, and blowing a save opportunity.  (pitches-strikes: 23-12)  Chicago White Sox prospect Carlos Torres let one of Furnish's runners score.


Both Wallace's and Robinson's home runs came in the second inning.

Peoria Saguaros gave up eight runs and the game in the 9th inning for an 18-10 loss to Mesa: link

Jason Motte (St. Louis): Tentatively expected to pitch for Hermosillo.


Veracruz Instructional League (Mexico)


Former DSL Cardinal (2003) and current Sioux City Canaries (American Association) closer Alexander Francisco is pitching for Gavilanes de Minatitlan.


Joe Rogers (Memphis-free agent) is still rehabbing from ligament replacement surgery.  He may join the Gavilanes de Minatitlan during the winter season in hopes of attaching attention for a contract during the 2009 season.

Minatitlan is currently 1-3, good for 4th in the five-team South Division.

Venezuelan League


Jose Rada (GCL): Did not pitch.

Ron Flores (Margarita-Memphis-free agent): Entered in the eighth and pitched to one batter, not allowing a hit or run.

Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent): Expected to join Lara in November.

Mark Worrell (Memphis): Expected to pitch for Zulia.


Venezuelan Parallel League


Thursday's results:


Frederick Parejo (Batavia): Entered as a pinch hitter and took over in right field, batting leadoff.   0-for-2 with one run and one walk.

Jose Garcia (Batavia): Played left field, no at-bats.

Domnit Bolivar (Quad Cities): Started at shortstop and batted 7th.  0-for-2 with one walk and one strikeout.  Assisted in one double play and was later replaced during the game.

Ex-Springfield infielder Juan Lucena is also playing for Aragua.

Aragua scored three in the 9th to send the game into extras, and beat Magallanes 8-7 in 10 innings: link


Kevin Moscatel (GCL): Started at catcher and batted 7th.  1-for-4 with one RBI and one strikeout.   He also had one fielding error.

Fernando Cedeno (VSL): Entered in the 6th and pitched two innings.  Allowed one hit, no runs, and struck out one.  (ground out-fly out: 3-2)

Orlando Munoz (GCL): Entered in the ninth and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit and no runs.

Caribes shut out Leones 7-0: link

Kleinenger Teran (GCL): Entered as a pinch hitter and took over first base, batting 3rd.  0-for-2 with one strikeout.

Frederick Parejo (Batavia): Started in left field and batted 6th.  2-for-2 with one double, one RBI, and two walks.

Jose Garcia (Batavia): Pinch runner and scored a run.

Deimer Bier (VSL): Entered in the sixth and pitched 1.2 innings.  Allowed no hits or runs, walked two, and struck out three en route to the win.

Jorge Rondon (Quad Cities): Followed Bier and pitched 1.1 innings.  Allowed two hits, no runs, one walk, and struck out two.  (ground out-fly out: 2-0) (inherited runners-scored: 1-0)

Eduardo Sanchez (Quad Cities): Pitched the final frame.  Allowed two hit, two earned runs, one walk, and struck out two.

D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent): Entered the game in the seventh as a pinch hitter.  He popped out in his only at-bat.

Licey scored two in the 8th to tie the game, later losing to Azucareros in the bottom of the 11th, 7-6: link
