The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 10/19

Two Jose Martinez doubles in Venezuela highlight Saturday's St. Louis Cardinals prospects news in winter ball.

Hawaii Winter League

 

Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Started as designated hitter and batted 4th.  1-for-5 with one triple, one run, and two strikeouts (swinging).  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 2)

 

Jim Rapoport (Springfield): Started in left field and batted 8th.  2-for-4 with one home run, two RBIs (one with two-outs), one run, and one strikeout (swinging).

The Sharks improve to 12-5-1 and have a three game lead over the second-best team in the league.

Arizona Fall League

 

Steven Hill (Palm Beach-taxi squad): Started at catcher and batted 7th.  1-for-4 with three strikeouts (one looking and two swinging).

 

Justin Fiske (Springfield): Entered in the fourth and pitched one inning.  Allowed two hits, three runs (two earned), and walked one en route to the loss.  He also had a throwing error on a force play, and the runner scored later in the inning.  (pitches-strikes: 18-10) (ground out-fly out: 1-2)

 

Tyler Norrick (Palm Beach): Followed Fiske and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit, no runs, walked one, and picked a runner off first base.  (pitches-strikes: 22-10) (ground out-fly out: 1-2)

 

Peoria Saguaros fell behind early and lost the game 3-1 to Mesa: link

The Saguaros fall to 8-3 and now have a two-game lead over the second-place teams in the league.

 

The AFL takes the day off Sunday. Peoria Saguaros welcome Peoria Javelinas Monday @ 12:35pm MST.

Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the eighth and pitched one inning.  Allowed no hits or runs, and hit one batter.  (ground out-fly out: 2-1)

Jason Motte (St. Louis): Tentatively expected to pitch for Hermosillo.

 

Venezuelan League

 

Jose Martinez (Springfield): Started at shortstop and batted lead off.  2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs.

Jose Rada (GCL): Did not pitch for Zulia.

Rico Washington (Memphis-free agent): Started in left field and was moved to first base, batted 4th.  0-for-5 and stole one base.

David Freese (Memphis): Started at third base and batted 7th.  2-for-5 at the plate.  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 2)

 

Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent) and Luke Gregerson (Springfield): Did not pitch for Margarita.

Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent): Expected to join Lara in November.

Mark Worell (Memphis): Tentatively expected to join Zulia.

 

Venezuelan Parallel League

 

Cardinals won 11-9 over the Pirates (improved to 2-0). No stats yet posted.

 

Alberto Rivero (CF) had a solid day going 3 for 5, with a double, RBI, and two runs. 

Roberto Perez (1B) was 3 for 4 with a double and four RBI. 

Francisco Guzman (RHP), a former catcher, notched his second save in as many days.

The St. Louis Cardinals' scout for ColombiaNeder Horta will be manager of Los Indios de Cartagena, and though the report below says that Palm Beach Cardinals center fielder Tyler Henley will be joining him, that information is erroneous: link

 

Also tentatively expected to play: Pete Parise (Palm Beach), Davis Bilardello (Palm Beach), Nick Derba (Palm Beach), Casey Mulligan (Palm Beach), Carlos Pupo (Quad Cities), and Casey Rowlett (Memphis).

 

Puerto Rican League

Begins play November 6.

 

Tentatively expected to play: Bryan Anderson (Memphis), Yadier Molina (St. Louis-injury may prelude), and Juan Gonzalez (Memphis-free agent).
