The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 10/23

Amaury Marti's 4-for-4 day with a home run in the Dominican Republic leads Wednesday's St. Louis Cardinals prospects news in winter ball.

Hawaii Winter League

 

Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Started at first base and batted 4th.  2-for-4 with one strikeout (swinging) and one ground into double play.

 

Jim Rapoport (Springfield): Started in centerfield and batted 6th.  0-for-3 with one walk and one strikeout (swinging).  Rapoport gunned down a base runner heading to third in the 2nd inning for an outfield assist.

 

Tyler Herron (Palm Beach): Entered in the sixth and pitched to eight batters.  Allowed three hits, four unearned runs, two walks, and struck out one.  (pitches-strikes: 35-20) (ground out-fly out: 0-1)

 

Honolulu never scored and lost 7-0 to North Shore: link

The Sharks fall to 13-7-1 and have a three-game lead over the second-best team in the league.

Arizona Fall League

 

Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  0-for-4 with one run and one walk.  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1)

 

Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started at second base and batted 7th.  2-for-4 with one home run, three RBIs (two with two-outs), and one run.  Also assisted in one double play.

 

Steven Hill (Springfield-taxi squad): Started as designated hitter and batted 8th.  1-for-4 with one double and one strikeout (looking).

 

Brad Furnish (Springfield): Entered in the fifth and pitched one inning.  Allowed two hits, no runs, and struck out one for the hold.  (pitches-strikes: 16-11) (ground out-fly out: 0-2)

 

Peoria Saguaros took an early lead and never looked back defeating Surprise 8-1: link

Former Cardinal prospect Les Walrond pitched six strong innings giving up two hits, one run (home run), and striking out seven for Magallanes.

Jose Calero (GCL): Entered in the 8th and pitched two innings.  Allowed two hits, one unearned run, walked two (one intentionally), and struck out one en route to a loss.  (ground out-fly out: 1-2) (inherited runners-scored: 3-1)

Pablo Ortiz (GCL): Followed Calero and pitched 2/3 of an inning.  Allowed no hits or runs, walked two, and struck out two.  (inherited runners-scored: 2-1)

Aragua tied the game in the 9th sending it into extras, but lost to Caribes in the 10th, 5-4: link

 

Jose Cortez (VSL): Started in left field and batted leadoff.  2-for-4 with one run.  Lifted later in the game.

Gerardo Mannbel (VSL): Started at shortstop and batted 3rd.  1-for-3 with one RBI, two runs, one walk, and stole two bases.  Assisted in two double plays in the field.

Roberto Perez (VSL): Started as designated hitter and batted 4th.  1-for-3 with one double, two two-out RBIs, one run, and one strikeout. 

Hector Garcia (VSL): Pinch hit and took over for R. Perez as designated hitter.  0-for-2 with one two-out RBI, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Yorbel Alcala (VSL): Started as catcher and batted 5th.  2-for-3 with one home run, four RBIs (two with two-outs), one run, and one strikeout.

Limbert Rivas (VSL): Replaced Alcala.  2-for-3 with one strikeout.

Cristofher Dumont (GCL): Started in right field and batted 7th.  1-for-3 with one double and two strikeouts.  Lifted later in the game.

Ildemaro Vargas (VSL): Started at second base and moved to shortstop, batting 9th.  3-for-5 with one double, one RBI, and one run.  Assisted in two double plays and committed one error in the field.

Javier Avendano (VSL): Started and pitched three innings.  Allowed one hit, one earned run, one walk, and struck out two.  (ground out-fly out: 5-2)

Fabian Marquez (VSL): Followed Avendano and pitched three innings.  Allowed two hits, one earned run, one home run, and struck out two en route to the win.  (ground out-fly out: 3-3)

Miguel Lopez (VSL): Followed Marquez and pitched three innings.  Allowed one hit, no runs, two walks, and struck out two.  (ground out-fly out: 3-3)
