The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 10/31

Tyler Greene's game-winning triple in Arizona led Thursday's St. Louis Cardinals prospects news in winter ball.

Hawaii Winter League


Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Started as catcher and batted 4th.  0-for-4 with two strikeouts (swinging and looking).  Reached base due to a wild pitch in the first inning.  Two base runners stole bases on him while behind the plate.

The Sharks fall into a tie in the East Division with Waikiki, with a 13-11-1 record.

Arizona Fall League


Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  0-for-4 at the plate.  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1)

Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started at third base and batted 5th.  2-for-4 with one triple, two two-out RBIs, and two strikeouts (swinging).

Brad Furnish (Springfield): Entered in the sixth and pitched two innings.  Allowed two hits, two earned runs, one walk, and struck out one while blowing his third save of the winter season.  (pitches-strikes :23-14) (ground out-fly out: 2-3)

Peoria Saguaros won on Greene's RBI in the eighth, beating Surprise 3-2: link

The Saguaros improve to 14-6 and keep pace with Mesa a top the American Division.

Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the seventh and pitched one hitless and scoreless inning.  (ground out-fly out:2-1)

Guasave dropped former Cardinal reliever Ray King from their roster.  He made four appearances posting a 7.36 ERA, giving up five hits, four runs (three earned), three home runs, one walk, and striking out one over 3.2 innings.


Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Currently on the Culiacan disabled list.

Jason Motte (St. Louis): Tentatively expected to pitch for Hermosillo.


Venezuelan League


Jose Rada (GCL) and Jose Martinez (Springfield): Did not play for Aragua.

Aragua made a late comeback and came up short, losing 6-5 to Lara: link

Luke Gregerson (Springfield) and Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent): Did not pitch for Margarita.

Margarita scored early and blew the game in the sixth, losing to La Guaira 5-1: link

Rico Washington (Memphis-free agent): Started in left field and batted 7th.  2-for-3 with one home run, one RBI, one run, and one walk.  Washington had a fielding error in the first inning letting runners advance, but not scoring.

David Freese (Memphis): Started at third base and batted 8th.  1-for-4 with one run and one strikeout (looking).  Freese had a fielding error in the third and the runner scored later in the inning.

Caribes fell behind early and made a small comeback that came up short, losing to Magallanes 13-7: link

Gerwuins Velazco (July 2nd signing): Took over for Roberto Perez (VSL) at first base, batting 4th.  1-for-2 with one double and one strikeout.

Omar Viloria (VSL): Took over for Yorbel Alcala (VSL) at catcher, batting 5th.  0-for-1 with one run and one walk.

Limbert Rivas (VSL): Took over for Christofher Dumont (GCL) as designated hitter, batting 7th.  1-for-2 with one run.

Eduardo Lopez (?): Started in centerfield and batted 8th.  2-for-2 with one double.

Moises Marquez (VSL): Pinch hit for Hayrich Martina (DSL) and took over second base, batting 9th.  1-for-1 with one double and two two-out RBIs.

Moises Colorado (VSL): Started and lasted one inning.  Allowed four hits, five earned runs, three walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck out two, en route to his first loss in Parallel League play.  (ground out-fly out: 1-0)

Fabian Marquez (VSL): Followed Colorado and pitched three innings.  Allowed two hits, no runs, one walk, and struck out three.  (ground out-fly out: 3-2) (inherited runners-scored: 2-2)

David Brito (VSL): Followed Marquez and pitched two innings.  Allowed four hits, three earned runs, two walks, threw three wild pitches, and struck out one.  (ground out-fly out: 1-3)


Frederick Parejo (Batavia): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  1-for-3 with one double, one run, and one strikeout.

Domnit Bolivar (Quad Cities): Started at shortstop and batted 2nd.  1-for-3 with one RBI, one run, one sac fly, one stolen base, and two strikeouts.  Assisted in one double play in the field.

Juan Lucena (Free agent): Started at third base and batted 8th.  1-for-1 with one double, two two-out RBIs, and one walk.

Ismael Cardona (Batavia): Started at catcher and batted 9th.  1-for-2 with one two-out RBI, two runs, two walks, and one strikeout.  Threw out an attempting base stealer (Dumont).

Pablo Ortiz (GCL): Entered in the fifth and pitched two innings.  Allowed two hits, no runs, one walk, and struck out one en route to his second win in Parallel League play.  (ground out-fly out: 2-0)

Jose Calero (GCL): Entered in the eighth and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit, no runs, and struck out one.  (ground out-fly out: 1-1)

Gigantes de Carolina managed by Jose Oquendo (St. Louis) featuring P.J. Walters (Memphis) and Bryan Anderson (Memphis) open next Thursday at Santurce @ 7:35 pm AST.  This is the only game scheduled for opening day.
