The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 11/01

David Freese's home run and two RBI in Venezuela led Friday's St. Louis Cardinals prospects news in winter ball.

Hawaii Winter League


Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Started at first base and batted 4th.  1-for-4 with one two-out RBI, one strikeout (swinging), and ground into one double play.  Assisted in one double play in the field.

Blake King (Palm Beach): Entered in the seventh and pitched two innings.  Allowed two hits, no runs, threw one wild pitch, and struck out five of nine batters faced.  (pitches-strikes: 39-29) (ground out-fly out: 2-0)


Honolulu had trouble getting runs across the plate and lost 5-1 to North Shore: link

The Sharks have now lost seven straight games, putting them at 14-11-1 and one game behind in the East Division.

Arizona Fall League


Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  1-for-3 with one RBI, one run, one intentional walk, one sac fly, one stolen base, and one strikeout (looking).

Brett Wallace (Springfield): Started at third base and batted 4th. 0-for-4 with one walk and reached on a throwing error.  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 2)
Adam Ottavino (Springfield): Started and pitched three innings.  Allowed three hits, three earned runs, one home run, two walks, hit one batter, and struck out four en route to his second win in league play.  (pitches-strikes: 58-31) (ground out-fly out: 3-2)

Justin Fiske (Springfield): Entered in the fifth and pitched one inning.  Allowed two hits and no runs.  (pitches-strikes: 16-12) (ground out-fly out: 1-2)

The Saguaros improve to 15-6 and are in a first place tie with Mesa in the American Division.

Mexican Pacific League


Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agent): Did not pitch for Obregon.

Obregon coughed up the game in the second and lost to Navojoa 7-2: link

They visit Navojoa (9-9) Sunday for a doubleheader starting at 5:00pm MST.


Ex-Cardinal Chris Narveson pitched seven strong innings allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out eight for Hermosillo: link


Ex-Cardinal Felix Jose was released by the Calgary Vipers of the independent Golden Baseball League and he is currently listed on the Mochis roster (inactive).

Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Currently on the Culiacan disabled list.

Jason Motte (St. Louis): Tentatively expected to pitch for Hermosillo.


Venezuelan League


Rico Washington (Memphis-free agent): Started in left field and batted 7th.  0-for-2 with two walks.

David Freese (Memphis): Started at third base and batted 8th.  1-for-3 with one home run, two RBIs, one run, and two strikeouts.

Jose Rada (GCL): Entered in the seventh and pitched 1.1 innings.  Allowed no hit or runs, walked one and struck out one.

Albert Pujols (St. Louis) along with Ex-Cardinals Edgar Renteria and Placido Polanco will be making a special appearance in Venezuela on behalf of Carlos Guillen and the Tigres de Aragua Foundation, for a benefit on November 17: link

Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent): Expected to join Lara in November.

Mark Worrell (Memphis): Tentatively expected to pitch for Zulia.


Venezuelan Parallel League


Kevin Moscatel (GCL): Started as catcher and moved to left field, batted 7th.  3-for-5 with three RBIs (one with two-outs), one walk, and threw out one base runner.

Fernando Cedeno (VSL): Entered in the eighth and pitched one inning.  Allowed four hits, three earned runs, and threw one wild pitch.  (ground out-fly out: 3-0)

Rigoberto Lugo (Batavia) is listed on the preliminary roster for Cangrejeros de Santurce.

Felipe Lopez (St. Louis-free agent) is listed as a reserve on the Cangrejeros de Santurce roster.


Gigantes de Carolina managed by Jose Oquendo (St. Louis) featuring P.J. Walters (Memphis) and Bryan Anderson (Memphis) open next Thursday at Santurce @ 7:35 pm AST.  This is the only game scheduled for opening day.
