The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 11/02

Luke Gregerson extends his scoreless string to 8 1/3 innings in Venezuela in Saturday's St. Louis Cardinals prospects news in winter ball.

Hawaii Winter League

 

Jim Rapoport (Springfield): Started in centerfield and batted 3rd.  2-for-4 with one double.

 

Honolulu pulled out the game in the sixth and held off North Shore for a 2-1 victory: link

The Sharks improve to 14-12-1 and climb back into a first place tie with Waikiki, who lost Saturday.

Arizona Fall League

 

Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  1-for-5 with one run.

Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started at second base and batted 3rd.  2-for-4 with two runs and one strikeout (swinging).

Brett Wallace (Springfield): Started at third base and batted 5th.  1-for-4 with one double, two two-out RBIs, one run, reached on a fielding error, and one strikeout (swinging).

Steven Hill (Palm Beach-taxi squad): Started as designated hitter and batted 6th.  1-for-2 with one two-out RBI, one walk, and one hit by pitch.  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1)

Tyler Norrick (Palm Beach): Entered in the 3rd and pitched one inning.  Allowed no hits or runs, walked one, and picked one off first base.  (pitches-strikes: 12-6) (ground out-fly out: 1-1)

 

Peoria Saguaros gave up six in the second and gave the game to Phoenix 8-5: link

The Saguaros fall to 15-7 and are one game out of first place in the American Division.

Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agent): Did not pitch for Obregon, day off.

Obregon (5-13) visit Navojoa (9-9) Sunday for a doubleheader, starting @ 5:00pm MST.

 

Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Currently on the Culiacan disabled list.

Jason Motte (St. Louis): Tentatively expected to pitch for Hermosillo.

 

Venezuelan League

 

Rico Washington (Memphis-free agent): Started at third base and batted 6th.  0-for-4 with one strikeout (swinging).

David Freese (Memphis): Did not play for Caribes.

Caribes gave up the lead and the game in the sixth, losing 4-2 to Lara: link

Jose Rada (GCL): Did not pitch for Aragua.

Jose Martinez (Springfield): Possibly rejoining the team on Thursday, after leaving to be with his wife and new born child.

Rob Flores (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the 7th and pitched to one batter, giving up a hit.  That runner later scored, but was unearned.

Luke Gregerson (Springfield): Entered in the eighth and pitched three innings.  Allowed three hit, no runs, and struck out two.  (ground out-fly out: 6-1)

Ex-Cardinals prospect Justin Pope blew the game in the tenth coughing uo two hits three earned runs, and walking two.

Margarita went to-to-toe with Zulia before giving the game away in extras, losing 7-4: link

 

Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the seventh and pitched two batters.  Allowed one hit, and two earned runs en route to his first loss in league play.  (ground out-fly out: 1-0)

Margarita scored two to tie in the sixth and gave up three in the seventh for a 5-2 loss to Zulia in game two of the doubleheader: link

Cesar Izturis (St. Louis): Expected to join Lara in November.

Mark Worrell (Memphis): Tentatively expected to join Zulia.

 

Venezuelan Parallel League

 

Ted Obregon (GCL): Started as designated hitter and batted leadoff.  2-for-3 with one run, one stolen base, one strikeout, and one caught stealing.

Anthony Fonseca (VSL): Started in centerfield and batted 2nd.  2-for-2 with one caught stealing.

Wilson Perez (VSL): Took over for Luis Campos (?) in right field and batted 2nd.  1-for-2 with one strikeout.

Billy Bolivar (VSL): Started in left field and moved to centerfield, batted 5th.  1-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Hector Garcia (VSL): Started at third base and batted 6th.  1-for-3 at the plate.

Javier Avendano (VSL): Started and pitched six innings.  Allowed four hits, no runs, one walk, and struck out four.  (ground out-fly out:8-4)

Miguel Lopez (VSL): Followed Avendano and pitched two innings.  Allowed two hits, no runs, and struck out one.  (ground out-fly out:2-2)

Francisco Guzman (VSL): Followed Lopez and pitched 0.2 innings.  Allowed three hits, two unearned runs, and one walk en route to his second loss in league play.  (ground out-fly out:1-1)

St. Louis blew the game in the bottom of the ninth, losing 2-1 to Tampa Bay: link

 

No Cardinals participated as Caribes beat Philadelphia 3-1: link

 

Domnit Bolivar (Quad Cities): Entered late in the game at shortstop, batting 5th.  0-for-1 with one strikeout.

Kleinenger Teran (GCL): Entered late in the game as a pinch hitter, batting 6th.  0-for-1 with one strikeout.

Jose Garcia (Batavia): Entered late in the game as a pinch hitter and took over at third base, batting 9th.  Walked and scored a run in his only plate appearance.

Deimer Bier (VSL): Entered in the eighth and pitched to the opponent's final batter, striking him out.  (inherited runners-scored: 2-0)

Aragua scored five in the sixth to beat Pittsburgh 8-3: link


The Venezuelan Parallel League takes Sunday off, returns Monday With:

Aragua (11-5) @ Magallanes (9-6)

Caribes (12-3) @ Leones (5-10)

St. Louis (6-7) has Monday off, as they regroup from falling from first place into a tie for tenth in the league.

 

Dominican Republic League

 

Amaury Marti (Memphis): Started in right field and batted 5th.  1-for-5 with two strikeouts (looking).  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 2)

D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent): Started at third base and batted 9th.  1-for-5 with one double, one RBI, one run, and four strikeouts (three looking and one swinging).  Also assisted in one double play in the field. (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 2)

Ex-Cardinal Timo Perez went 4-for-5 with two home runs and drove in three runs for Licey.

Licey jumped out in front early in the game and beat Gigantes 9-4: link

Luis Perdomo (Springfield): Did not pitch for Aguilas.

Puerto Rican League

 

Gigantes de Carolina managed by Jose Oquendo (St. Louis) featuring P.J. Walters (Memphis) and Bryan Anderson (Memphis) open Thursday at Santurce, which have Rigoberto Lugo (Batavia) listed on their roster, @ 7:35 pm AST.  This is the only game scheduled for opening day.

 

Also participating: Felipe Lopez (St. Louis-free agent/reserve), Yadier Molina (St. Louis-December), and possibly Juan Gonzalez (Memphis-free agent).
