So far, the going has been tough for the 2006 second-round draft pick from TCU. Set to turn 24 in January, Furnish has been roughed up for 13 earned runs in 11 2/3 Arizona innings for an ERA of 10.03. He has yielded 18 hits and six walks with an opposing batting average of 3.75. Furnish has fanned eight. Since making some adjustments, Furnish has allowed four runs in his last 7 1/3 innings (4.91 ERA).
The 2008 regular season was a bit uneven for Furnish also. Coming off surgery, he initially struggled with his control at A-Advanced Palm Beach and after 25 appearances there, including 20 starts, his ERA was over five. Never a ground ball pitcher, he allowed four fly outs for every three ground outs.
Yet, coming off a good outing after an awful July overall, he was promoted to Double-A Springfield and pitched well in four starts there to close the regular season (1.64 ERA and OBA of .221).
Coming into the 2008 campaign, we ranked Furnish as the Cardinals organizations' 30th-ranked prospect after he was not among the top 40 the year before.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder sat down to discuss his 2008 season, his objectives for this fall and next spring prior to a recent AFL game.
