The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 11/09

Catcher Steven Hill's two home runs and five RBI in Arizona headline Saturday's St. Louis Cardinals prospects news in winter ball.

Hawaii Winter League

 

Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Started at catcher and batted 4th.  0-for-3 with one RBI, one sac fly, and two strikeouts.  Caught one runner attempting to steal second base.

Jim Rapoport (Springfield): Started in centerfield and batted 8th.  2-for-4 with one run and one stolen base.

 

Honolulu scored three runs in the sixth to seal a 4-1 victory over Waikiki: link

 

The Sharks improve to 15-15-2 and are one and a half games out of first in the East Division.

Honolulu visits division rival Waikiki (17-14-1) Sunday @ 1:00pm HT.

Arizona Fall League

 

Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  1-for-5 with one two-out RBI, one run, and one walk.  Picked up an outfield assist in the first inning.  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1)

Steven Hill (Palm Beach-taxi squad): Started at catcher and batted 4th.  3-for-5 with two home runs, five RBIs, two runs, and two strikeouts (looking and swinging).  Missed a catch for an error in the first inning and threw out two of five attempted base stealers.

Brett Wallace (Springfield): Started at third base and batted 5th.  1-for-5 with one double, one run, and two strikeouts (looking and swinging).  Assisted in two double plays in the field.

Tyler Norrick (Palm Beach): Entered in the ninth and pitched one inning.  Allowed three hits, four earned runs, one walk, one home run, and struck one out.  (pitches-strikes :22-13) (ground out-fly out: 1-1) (inherited runners-scored: 2-2)

 

Peoria Saguaros came up short in the slug fest, losing 16-15 to Scottsdale: link

Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the ninth and pitched to three batters.  Allowed no hits, three runs (two earned), two walks, and hit one batter.

Ex-Memphis Redbird Dan Serafini made his first start giving up five hits, two runs, three walks, and striking out two over 3.2 innings.

Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Currently on the Culiacan disabled list.

Jason Motte (St. Louis): Tentatively expected to pitch for Hermosillo.

 

Venezuelan League

 

Luke Gregerson (Springfield) and Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent): Did not pitch for Margarita.

Former Cardinals prospect Javier Colina went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs for La Guaira.  Les Walrond allowed five hits, four runs, and struck out three over five innings for Magallanes.  La Guaira beat Magallanes 10-6: link

Venezuelan Parallel League

 

Domnit Bolivar (Quad Cities): Started as designated hitter and batted 8th.  1-for-4 with one double, two RBIs, and two strikeouts.

Frederick Parejo (Batavia): Started in centerfield and batted 9th.  1-for-4 with one strikeout.

Ruben Alvarado (VSL): Entered in the third and pitched 1.1 innings.  Allowed two hits, no runs, and one walk.  (ground out-fly out: 3-0) (inherited runners-scored: 2-1)

Pablo Ortiz (GCL): Followed Alvarado and pitched three innings.  Allowed one hit, no runs, and struck out two.  (ground out-fly out:1-5)

Jorge Rondon (Quad Cities): Followed Ortiz and pitched the final inning, allowing no hits or runs, and striking out two.

Aragua gave up the game in the first three innings, losing to Caribes 6-2: link

 

Anthony Fonseca (VSL): Started in right field and batted 2nd.  2-for-4 with one double, one RBI, one run, and stole one base.

Alberto Rivero (VSL): Started in centerfield and batted 3rd.  1-for-5 with one stolen base and one strikeout.

Roberto Perez (VSL): Started as designated hitter and batted 4th.  1-for-2 with one two-out RBI, one run, and two walks.

Roberto Espinoza (Quad Cities): Started at first base and batted 5th.  0-for-3 with one run, two walks, and one strikeout.

Yorbel Alcala (VSL): Started as catcher and batted 6th.  1-for-3 with one two-out RBI and one walk.

Cesar Valera (July 2nd Signing): Started at shortstop and batted 9th.  3-for-5 with one triple, two RBIs, two runs, and one stolen base.

Javier Avendano (VSL): Started and pitched five innings.  Allowed two hits, no runs, and struck out four en route to his first win in league play.  (ground out-fly out: 3-8)

David Brito (VSL): Entered in the eighth and pitched to four batters, giving up four hits and three earned runs.

Francisco Guzman (VSL): Entered in the eighth and walked the only two batters faced.  (inherited runners-scored:2-1)

Eduardo Sanchez (Quad Cities): Followed Guzman and pitched the final two innings.  Allowed one hit, no runs, and struck out four of seven faced en route to his first save in league play.  (inherited runners-scored: 3-0)

D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent): Started at third base and batted 9th.  1-for-3 with one RBI and two strikeouts (swinging).  Assisted in one double play in the field.  Jimenez picked up his 300th career hit in DWL play, all with Licey: link (at the bottom)

Davis Bilardello (Palm Beach) gave up three runs in the eighth and was charged with the loss, as Sincelejo lost to Cartagena 6-2: link

Puerto Rican League

 

Luis Mateo (Johnson City): Entered the game in the ninth and took over at second base, batting 2nd.  1-for-1 with one run.

Bryan Anderson (Memphis):  Entered the game in the eighth as a pinch hitter and took over as catcher, batting 8th.  0-for-1 with two runs and two walks.

P.J. Walters (Memphis) and Yadier Molina (St. Louis-December): Did not play for Carolina.

 

Ex-Cardinal Bill Pulsipher started and gave up six hits, four runs, two walks, and struck out one over four innings for Arecibo.
