The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 11/12

Hawaii Winter League


4 days until the playoffs begin.


Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Started at catcher and batted 4th.  1-for-5 with one double and one two-out RBI.

Tyler Herron (Springfield): Entered in the fifth and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit, two unearned runs, one walk, and struck out one picking up his second hold of the winter season.  Herron had a throwing error that let the batter get on base and runner advance to second.  Both runners scored later in the inning.  (pitches-strikes :28-15) (ground out-fly out: 1-1)


Honolulu gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth and lost to North Shore 5-4: link

The Sharks fall to 16-16-2 and are a half game behind Waikiki in the East Division.

Honolulu visits West Oahu (who clinched the West Division Tuesday) on Wednesday @ 3:00pm HT.

Arizona Fall League


One-game championship is November 22.


Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  1-for-5 with two strikeouts (swinging).  (Runners left in scoring position with 2-outs: 1)

Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started at third base and batted 6th.  1-for-4 with one run and two strikeouts (swinging and foul tip).

Brad Furnish (Springfield): Entered in the fifth and pitched one inning, striking out all three batters faced and picking up his second hold in league play (two swinging and one looking).  (pitches-strikes: 14-9)

Justin Fiske (Springfield): Followed Furnish and pitched one inning.  Allowed two hits, one earned run, threw one wild pitch, and picked up his first hold in league play.  (pitches-strikes: 19-13) (ground out-fly out :2-1)


Peoria Saguaros gave up the damaging run in the bottom of the eighth, losing 6-5 to Phoenix: link

The Saguaros fall to 20-10 and are one game ahead of Mesa in the American Division.

Peoria Sagauros host Peoria Javelinas Wednesday @ 12:35pm MST.

Mexican Pacific League


Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the seventh and pitched to three batters.  Allowed one hit, no runs, and struck out one picking up his second hold in league play.  (inherited runners-scored: 2-1)

Obregon doubled up Mazatlan 6-3: link

Obregon (10-17) visit Mazatlan (11-16) Wednesday @ 8:00pm MST.

Obregon also placed former Memphis Redbird Iker Franco on the disabled list.

Former Cardinals' prospect Reid Gorecki went 2-for-4 with one RBI and walk for Navojoa.  He also signed a minor league deal this past week to return to the Atlanta Braves organization next season.

Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Currently on the Culiacan disabled list.

Jason Motte (St. Louis): Tentatively expected to pitch for Hermosillo.


Venezuelan League


Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the eighth and pitched to one batter.  He gave up a double, one runner scored but the second runner was drilled at home.  He also earned his fourth hold of the winter season.  (inherited runners-scored :2-1)

Luke Gregerson (Springfield): Did not pitch for Margarita.

Margarita scored five in the seventh and held off Lara for a 9-8 victory: link

Jose Martinez (Springfield) and Jose Rada (GCL): Did not play for Aragua.

Former Memphis Redbird Prentice Redman didn't play for Aragua, but signed with the Seattle Mariners to stay in the organization another year.

Aragua (9-12) takes Wednesday off, visits Magallanes (11-2) Thursday @ 7:30pm VST.


Former Springfield Cardinal Jose Garcia gave up two hits, four runs, two walks, and struck out one over two innings for Caribes.

Venezuelan Parallel League


Jose Cortez (VSL): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, two runs, and one sacrifice.

Cesar Valera (July 2nd Signing): Started at shortstop and batted 2nd.  2-for-6 with one double, one RBI, and one strikeout.  He also had two errors in the field.

Roberto Espinoza (Quad Cities): Started at first base and batted 4th.  2-for-4 with one double and one walk.

Yorbel Alcala (VSL): Replaced Limbert Rivas (VSL) late in the game at catcher, batting 8th.  1-for-1 with two two-out RBIs and one walk.

Ildemaro Vargas (VSL): Started at second base and batted 9th.  1-for-1 with two runsand one walk.

Moises Colorado (VSL): Started and pitched five innings.  Allowed six hits, two earned runs, two walks, athrew one wild pitch, and struck out three.  (ground out-fly out: 6-4)

Miguel Lopez (VSL): Followed Colorado and pitched five innings.  Allowed four hits, five unearned runs, one walk, and struck out four.  (ground out-fly out: 7-4)

Gregorio Ramos (VSL): Followed Lopez and pitched two innings.  Allowed four hits, three earned runs, and two home runs en route to his second loss in league play.  (ground out-fly out: 3-2)

St. Louis tied it up int he bottom of the ninth, but blew it in extras to Leones 10-7: link

Dominican Republic League


Amaury Marti (Memphis) and D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent): Did not play for Licey.

Licey @ Gigantes was cancelled for Tuesday.


Luis Perdomo (Springfield): Did not pitch for Aguilas.

Colombian League


Former Cardinal Edgar Renteria has expressed his desire to return to the St. Louis Cardinals in his latest interview.  Also discussed were rumors he was talking to the Joe Torre and the Los Angeles Dodgers, which he calls false.  He said he will not accept a minor league deal at this time, but maybe if things do not work out later in the future: link


Monteria beat Barranquilla, winning the first game 5-2 of a double header.

Ex-Cardinals' prospect Adam Daniels started and only allowed three hits and picked up the win as Sincelejo beat Cartagena 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader: link

Puerto Rican League


Bryan Anderson (Memphis): Started at catcher and batted 8th.  Was caught stealing after being walked in the third, reached base on a catcher interference in the fifth, and was removed in the seventh.  Two plate appearances, no official at-bat.  Had one stolen base on him.

P.J. Walters (Memphis): Started and pitched 5.1 innings.  Allowed five hits, no runs, and struck out seven.  (ground out-fly out: 3-6)

Luis Mateo (Johnson City) and Yadier Molina (St. Louis-December): Did not play for Carolina.


Former Cardinal John Rodriguez has yet to get a hit in eight at-bats for Santurce.

Rigoberto Lugo (Batavia) and Felipe Lopez (St. Louis-free agent): Did not play for Santurce.


Santurce scored three in the sixth and held off Carolina 3-1: link
