The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 11/14

Tyler Greene's home run in Arizona headlines Thursday's St. Louis Cardinals prospects news in winter ball.

Hawaii Winter League


2 more days left in the regular season.


Honolulu (16-17-2) and West Oahu (18-14-3) game was canceled Thursday.

Honolulu will host divisional rival Waikiki (18-16-1) Friday @ 7:30pm HT.

The Sharks sit only a game and a half behind the Beach Boys.


Players participating: Tony Cruz (Palm Beach), Jim Rapoport (Springfield), Blake King (Palm Beach), and Tyler Herron (Springfield).


Arizona Fall League


Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  1-for-5 with one two-out RBI and one strikeout (swinging).  Robinson messed up a grounder in the 8th, as one run scored and the other advanced, scoring later in the inning.

Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started at third base and batted 3rd.  1-for-3 with one home run, one RBI, two runs, one walk, and one strikeout (looking).


Peoria Saguaros gave up six runs in the 8th and made a small comeback but lost to Peoria Javelinas 9-6: link

The Saguaros fall to 21-11 and are now tied with Mesa atop the American Division.

Peoria Saguaros visit Phoenix (18-12) Friday @ 7:05pm MST.  The Saguaros are 4-2 this fall season vs. Desert Dogs.

Mexican Pacific League


Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agent): Did not pitch for Obregon.

Obregon (10-19) welcome Hermosillo (15-14) Friday @ 7:30pm MST.


Apparently there has been a falling out between former Memphis Redbird Reggie Taylor and Culiacan.  Rumor has it that Taylor may join up with Navojoa.


Former Cardinals closer Juan Acevedo was suspended 25 games for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. He plays for Mexicali: link

Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Currently on the Culiacan disabled list.

Jason Motte (St. Louis): Tentatively expected to pitch for Hermosillo.


Venezuelan League


Jose Rada (GCL): Entered in the fourth and pitched two innings.  Allowed one hit, no runs, one walk, and hit one batter en route to his second win in league play.  (ground out-fly out: 4-2)

Jose Martinez (Springfield): Did not play for Aragua.

Luke Gregerson (Springfield): Did not pitch for Margarita.

Margarita (9-16) took Thursday off, welcome Magallanes (12-13) Friday @ 8:00pm VST.


Editor's note: Some may have noticed that Gregerson has apparently not pitched since 11/6. That is not the case. Though unreported prior to now, he threw Wednesday night. Gregerson continued his scoreless campaign on a four-ground ball inning giving up one double (GB over 3B bag). He reportedly showed good late sink on his fastball.


Ron Flores (Memphis-free agent) has left the Bravos de Margarita team as of Thursday, according to their official site.  No further information has been released at this time on whether he left on his own or by team request.  He made ten relief appearances posting an 0-1 record, 7.36 ERA, and picked up four holds.  He allowed six hits, four runs (three earned), one home run, three walks, and struck out four over 3.2 innings.  As reported by Derrick Goold earlier in the fall, Flores went to winter league looking to experiment with a sidearm motion.


Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent): Expected to join Lara in the next coming weeks.

Mark Worrell (Memphis): Tentatively expected to join Zulia.


Venezuelan Parallel League


Anthony Fonseca (VSL): Started in left field and batted leadoff.  1-for-3 with one RBI, two runs, one walk, and one strikeout.

Alberto Rivero (VSL): Started in centerfield and batted 2nd.  2-for-4 with one double, one triple, four RBIs, and one run.

Cesar Valera (July 2nd signing): Started at shortstop and batted 3rd.  2-for-5 with one RBI, one run, and one fielding error.

Gerardo Mannbel (VSL): Started at third base and batted 4th.  2-for-3 with one two-out RBI.

Yorbel Alcala (VSL): Started at catcher and batted 6th.  1-for-4 with one run, one stolen base and one strikeout.  Also threw out one base runner behind the plate.

Carlos Noguera (VSL): Started and pitched six innings.  Allowed four hit, one earned run, one walk, hit one batter, and struck out four for his first win (1-4) in league play.  (ground out-fly out: 5-6)

Jose Tovar (VSL Academy Tryout): Followed Noguera and pitched two innings.  Allowed no hits or runs, one walk, and threw one wild pitch.  (ground out-fly out: 1-5)

Gregorio Ramos (VSL): Followed Tovar and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit, one unearned run, and one walk. (ground out-fly out: 2-1)

St. Louis scored their nine runs in their final three frames to beat the NY Mets 9-2: link

Gerardo Mannbel (VSL): Started at third base and batted 3rd.  2-for-3 at the plate.

Romulo Ruiz (GCL) made his first appearance since being on the disabled list all season, starting as designated hitter and batting 4th.  0-for-3 with one strikeout.

Sergio Nieves (July 2nd Signing): Started and pitched four innings.  Allowed three hits, three unearned runs, one home run, three walks, threw one wild pitch, and struck out seven en route to his second loss (0-2) in league play.  (ground out-fly out: 2-3)

Jose Weffer (July 2nd Signing): Followed Nieves and pitched two innings.  Allowed no hits or runs, one walks, and struck out one.  (ground out-fly out: 1-3)

Carlos Oraa (VSL): Started and pitched 5.1 innings.  Allowed three hits, no runs, and one walk en route to his first win (1-0) in league play.

Eduardo Sanchez (Quad Cities): Followed Oraa and pitched 1.2 innings.  Faced four batters, striking one out and picking up his second save in league play..  (ground out-fly out: 2-1) (inherited runners-scored: 1-0)

Luis Mateo (Johnson City) is 1-for-3 with two runs and one total base in three games.

P.J. Walters (Memphis) has made two starts posting a 1.17 ERA.  He's allowed eight hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck out 11 over 7.2 innings.
