The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 11/16

Colombian League Player of the Week Donovan Solano, who hit .471 last week, headlines Saturday's St. Louis Cardinals prospects news in winter ball.

Hawaii Winter League

 

Tony Cruz (Palm Beach): Pinch hit for the designated hitter in the ninth, batting 4th.  1-for-1 at the plate.

Jim Rapoport (Springfield): Started in centerfield and batted 5th.  2-for-4 with one RBI, one sacrifice, one strikeout (swinging), and one caught stealing.

 

Honolulu gave up two runs and the game in the bottom of the ninth to Waikiki 5-4: link

With this loss, The Sharks were eliminated from the championship game on Sunday: link

The Honolulu Sharks finish with a 17-18-2 record and one and a half games out of first in the East Division.

Arizona Fall League

 

Four games left in the regular season schedule.

 

Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  2-for-5 with one double, one RBI, one run, and one strikeout (looking).  Robinson drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started at third base and batted 3rd.  0-for-3 with one hit by pitch and two strikeouts (looking).  He assisted in one double play and committed one fielding error in the first inning, no runs scored.  His other error is explained below.  Greene was ejected in the eighth after being called out on strikes for the second time.

Steven Hill (Palm Beach-taxi squad): Started as designated hitter and batted 8th.  1-for-2 with one two-out RBI and one walk.

Brett Wallace (Springfield): Pinch hit for Hill, batting 8th.  1-for-1 with one RBI.

Brad Furnish (Springfield): Entered in the sixth and pitched two innings.  Allowed one hit, no runs, and struck out one.  (pitches-strikes: 27-21) (ground out-fly out: 2-3)

Justin Fiske (Springfield): Followed Furnish and pitched one inning.  Allowed no hits or runs, and struck out one.  (pitches-strikes: 11-8) (ground out-fly out: 1-1)

 

Pop Warner was ejected in the fourth after a confrontation with the umpire over a ruled interference error by Greene.  Runners advanced and only one scored.

 

Peoria Saguaros scored three in the bottom of the ninth to beat Scottsdale 5-4: link

The Saguaros improve to 23-11 and are still tied with Mesa in first place in the American Division.

No games on Sunday.  Peoria Saguaros host Phoenix (18-14) on Monday @ 12:35pm MST.

Mexican Pacific League

 

Five days until the end of the first half of the season.

 

Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agent): Entered in the seventh and pitched to two batters, inducing two ground outs.

Obregon gave up four runs in the eighth and lost to Hermosillo 8-4: link

Obregon (11-20) welcome Hermosillo (16-15) Sunday @ 5:00pm MST.

 

Ex-Cardinals' closer Juan Acevedo will be able to return to play for Mexicali on December 12, after serving his suspension.

Former Memphis Redbird Reggie Taylor has in fact left Culiacan, but instead of joining Mayos (as rumored), he will play for Obregon.

Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Currently on the Culiacan disabled list.

Jason Motte (St. Louis): Tentatively expected to join Hermosillo.

 

Venezuelan League

 

Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent) will be making a special appearance (Nov. 15) and participate in a golf tournament (Nov. 16) in support of the Luis Sojo Foundation in Lara.  Others making appearances include Derek Jeter (Yankees), Henry Blanco (Cubs), and Mariano Rivero (Yankees) to name a few: link

 

Jose Martinez (Springfield) and Jose Rada (GCL): Did not play for Aragua.

Former Memphis Redbird Mike Smith pitched 6.2 innings allowing seven hits, three runs, one walk, and striking out six for Caribes.

Aragua scored four in their final to frames and held off Caribes 6-4: link

Aragua (11-3) welcomes Caracas (19-7) Sunday @ 1:00pm VST.

 

Luke Gregerson (Springfield): Did not pitch for Margarita.

Margarita lost to Magallanes 11-8 in a rain-shortened slugfest: link

Mark Worrell (Memphis): Tentatively expected to join Zulia.

 

Venezuelan Parallel League

 

No results posted for Saturday and no games scheduled for Sunday.

Dominican Republic League

 

Amaury Marti (Memphis) and D'Angelo Jimenez (Memphis-free agent): Did not play for Licey.

Licey @ Estrellas was postponed due to rain.  Games postponed on Saturday are scheduled for make-up on Monday. 

 

Luis Perdomo (Springfield): Did not pitch for Aguilas.

Former Cardinal Julian Tavarez was almost lights out.  He allowed three hits, no runs, three walks, and struck out eight over seven innings, picking up the win for Aguilas.

Former major leaguer Luis Polonia (Aguilas) became the all-time hits leader in the Dominican Republic League, as he connected for his 878 hit on Saturday: link

Polonia hasn't played in the majors since 2000, when he split time between the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees.

Colombian League

 

Monteria beat Cartagena 4-3.

Barranquilla vs. Sincelejo was postponed due to rain. 

Sincelejo's Ryan Bird (Instructional) and former Cardinal prospect Adam Daniels are penciled in for the doubleheader starts Sunday, depending on the field conditions.

Barranquilla's infielder Donovan Solano (Springfield) was named Player of the Week for the third week of Colombian play.  He batted .471 with four extra base hits (three doubles and one home run), three RBIs, and scored seven runs: link (all covered in the same article)

 

The Colombian League and DirecTV came to an agreement to start airing games on November 22.  The package includes only Saturday games and the playoffs at this time: link

 

Puerto Rican League

 

Rigoberto Lugo (Batavia) and Felipe Lopez (St. Louis-free agent): Did not play for Santurce.

Bryan Anderson (Memphis), P.J. Walters (Memphis), Luis Mateo (Johnson City), and Yadier Molina (St. Louis-December): Did not play for Carolina.
