The Cardinals Winter League Notebook: 11/20

Donovan Solano's 4-for-4 day and 16-game hitting streak in Colombia headlines Wednesday's St. Louis Cardinals prospects news in winter ball.

Arizona Fall League

 

Shane Robinson (Memphis): Started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  1-for-3 with one RBI and one sac fly.

Brett Wallace (Springfield): Started at third base an batted 3rd.  2-for-3 with one home run, one two-out RBI, one run, one intentional walk, and one strike out (swinging).

Tyler Greene (Memphis): Started at second base and batted 7th.  1-for-4 with one run and one strike out (swinging).  Assisted in one double play in the field.

Adam Ottavino (Springfield): Started and pitched two innings.  Allowed four hits, three earned runs, one home run, two walks, hit one batter, and struck out four.  (pitches-strikes: 53-30) (ground out-fly out: 1-1)

Justin Fiske (Springfield): Entered in the eighth and pitched to two batters.  Allowed one hit, two earned runs, and one walk en route to his second loss in league play.  (pitches-strikes: 8-4)

Brad Furnish (Springfield): Entered in the ninth and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit, no runs, and walked one.  (pitches-strikes: 18-9) (ground out-fly out: 1-2)

 

Peoria Saguaros gave up a grand slam in the eighth and never recovered, losing 7-4 to divisional rival Mesa: link

The Saguaros fall to 25-12 and are now a game behind Mesa in the American Division. Even if the Peoria Saguaros win and Mesa losses on Thursday, Mesa has the tiebreaker after taking the season series, four out of seven games.

Hugo Castellanos (Memphis-free agent): Did not pitch for Obregon.

Former Memphis Redbird Dan Serafini was lit up and Ex-Cardinal Andy Cavazos struck out two of three batters faced, for Obregon.

Francisco Rivera (Quad Cities): Currently on the Culiacan disabled list.

Jason Motte (St. Louis): Tentatively expected to pitch for Hermosillo.

 

Veracruz Instructional League (Mexico)

Jose Martinez (Springfield) and Jose Rada (GCL): Did not play for Aragua.

Luke Gregerson (Springfield): Entered in the eighth and pitched one inning.  Allowed no hits or runs, walked one and struck out two picking up his sixth hold of the season.  (ground out-fly out: 1-0)

Cesar Izturis (St. Louis-free agent): Expected to join Lara in the coming weeks.

Alberto Rivero (VSL): Started in centerfield and batted 2nd.  1-for-2 at the plate.

Roberto Espinoza (Quad Cities): Started at first base and batted 5th.  1-for-2 at the plate.

Wilson Perez (VSL): Took over for Billy Bolivar (VSL) in right field, batting 7th.  1-for-1 at the plate.

Yorbel Alcala (VSL): Started at catcher and batted 8th.  1-for-2 at the plate.

Sergio Nieves (July 2nd Signing): Started and pitched 2.1 innings.  Allowed six hits, five runs (four earned), and two walks en route to his third loss in league play.

Miguel Lopez (VSL): Followed Nieves and pitched 3.2 innings.  Allowed two hit, no runs, and struck out one.

St. Louis was held to four hits and were shut out 6-0 by Caracas: link

 

Jose Garcia (Batavia): Took over for Juan Lucena (free agent) at third base, batting 7th.  1-for-1 with one home run, one RBI, one run, and one walk.

Jorge Rondon (Quad Cities): Entered in the seventh and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit, no runs, two walks, and struck out one.  (ground out-fly out: 1-1)

Pablo Ortiz (GCL): Followed Rondon and pitched two innings.  Allowed no hits or runs and struck out one en route to his third win in league play.  (ground out-fly out: 4-1)

Aragua came back in the eighth and ninth to beat La Guaira 5-3: link

 

Wednesday's results:

 

Jose Garcia (Batavia): Took over at third base mid-game, batting 3rd.  0-for-1 with one run, one walk, and one stolen base.

Kleinenger Teran (GCL): Pinch hit for the designated hitter, batting 4th.  1-for-1 at the plate.

Jose Calero (GCL): Started and pitched five innings.  Allowed two hits, no runs, two walks, and struck out four en route to his third win in league play.  (ground out-fly out: 1-7)

Omar Diaz (GCL): Entered in the ninth and pitched one inning.  Allowed on hit, no runs, and one walk.  (ground out-fly out: 1-2)

Aragua beat Pittsburgh 7-1: link

 

Jose Cortez (VSL): Started in left field and moved to first base, batting leadoff.  1-for-3 with one run and one walk.  Assisted in one double play in the field.

Jackson Solarte (VSL): Followed Noguera and pitched one inning.  Allowed one hit, one unearned run, one walk, and committed one error.  (ground out-fly out: 2-0)

David Brito (VSL): Followed Solarte and pitched two innings.  Al;lowed one hit and no runs.  (ground out-fly out: 2-3)

Eduardo Sanchez (Quad Cities): Followed Brito and struck out all three of four batters faced for his first win in league play.

St. Louis scored the winning run in the bottom of the tenth to beat Tampa Bay 3-2: link

Ex-Cardinal Jorge Sosa started and pitched seven innings allowing seven hits and two runs, picking up his fifth win in league play.

Licey gave up thtree runs in the bottom of the ninth, but held on to beat Escogido 6-5: link

Donovan Solano (Springfield) went 4-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 16 games.

Alexander Castellano (DSL): Did not play.

 

Playing for Sincelejo:

Nick Derba (Palm Beach): Two Games, 1-for-5 with one RBI, one total base, and committed one error.

Casey Rowlett (Springfield): Did not play.

 

Davis Bilardello (Palm Beach), Pete Parise (Palm Beach), and Ryan Bird (Instructional): Did not pitch.

Adam Daniels (Lincoln-A.A.): Started one game, pitching seven innings and allowing three hits, no runs, two walks, and struck out six, while picking up his second win in league play.

 

Puerto Rican League

 

Bryan Anderson (Memphis): Pinch hit and took over as catcher, batting 8th.  His only at-bat came in the seventh, as he ground out to second base.

P.J. Walters (Memphis), Luis Mateo (Johnson City), and Yadier Molina (St. Louis-December): Did not play for Carolina.
