Spring Training Notebook

--- David Freese (3B) has missed a couple of days taking infield because of a sore left Achilles tendon; he is expected to be cleared to participate in workouts, including taking infield today. Freese is the clear frontrunner in my opinion in winning the third base job with Troy Glaus out for what everyone thinks will be the first month of the season, I'm leaning towards he'll likely miss more playing time at the major league level than four weeks. Freese participated in the coach-pitch scrimmage Monday; I'd still list him day-to-day, for now.

--- Brendan Ryan (INF) is expected to miss at least the first two Grapefruit League games this week, in order to rest his wrist. According to a report in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Ryan's wrist tendinitis only seems to bother him when he's swinging the bat. Ryan will be re-evaluated later this week. Ryan is expected to make the team as a utility infielder, despite other reports from a variety of sources, I don't think Ryan has a shot at being the everyday shortstop or second baseman. Ryan could see some playing time at third as well. His advantage to the team and the key to him making the team's 25-man roster, in my opinion is because of his versatility, the ability to play three infield positions.

--- Khalil Greene (SS) didn't participate in drills on Monday due to some stiffness in his right shoulder. He should be listed as day-to-day.

--- Joe Mather (OF) is getting to take more infield practice at third with Freese & Ryan missing some playing time due to their minor injuries. Drafted as a shortstop, Mather should be able to fill in at third base if necessary.

--- Chris Duncan (OF) appears to be on track to reclaim his spot on the Cardinals 25-man roster. He'll most likely end up in a platoon situation with Joe Mather in left.

--- Todd Wellemeyer (P) threw live batting practice Monday and is schedule to make his first Grapefruit League start Friday.

Hot Stove Leftovers

--- Juan Cruz (P). Fans still hoping the Cardinals could come through with a sign-and-trade deal for pitcher Juan Cruz can keep their hopes up for another day or two at least as a previously reported deal with the Minnesota Twins remains in limbo as there hasn't been any significant progress.

---Odalis Perez (P), who signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals, was released yesterday after he failed to report for spring training. Perez was rumored throughout the winter as someone the Cardinals may have been interested in pursuing a deal for another starter.

---Manny Ramirez (OF), will be playing for the Dodgers eventually, but there still isn't a deal. Even with Albert Pujols acting as his lobbyist, Manny never had a snowball chance of reaching a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.

--- Todd Worrell (P) (da, make that Mark Worrell) is off to a good start with the Padres in their spring training camp in Arizona. I'm hoping Mark has a chance to make the major league club as a member of their bullpen. I've always thought in the last two seasons in the Cardinals organization that his stock was under-valued.
