The Cardinals Spring Training Notebook 03/11

Outfielder Chris Duncan's homer and three RBIs Tuesday helped lead the Cardinals to a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in Grapefruit League action Tuesday.

Second baseman Skip Schumaker singled, doubled and scored two runs with outfielder Rick Ankiel adding a double and two singles as the hottest hitting team in the National League improved to 6-4-1 this spring.

St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse, making his team high third spring training start, became to first Cardinal hurler to pitch into the fifth frame. Lohse allowed one run on two hits over 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk, to pick up the win.

The Cardinals 2008 "Minor League Pitcher of the Year", Jess Todd, tossed two scoreless frames and Jason Motte became the first pitcher to rack up a save this spring, as he retired the side in order in the ninth, with two strikeouts and a lazy fly ball to center.


At the start of play Tuesday, the Cardinals lead all N.L. clubs with a .292 spring team batting average. Minor league corner infielder Allen Craig's .471 batting average ranks 2nd among N.L. Grapefruit League players, while the Cardinals new shortstop Khalil Greene's .381 mark is 5th-highest.


Outfielder Colby Rasmus was a late scratch from Tuesday's game because of a reported "a little tightness" in his hamstring. Rasmus did participate in drills Tuesday. He's tentatively scheduled to play Wednesday, but should be considered day-to-day at this time.


Clayton Mortensen threw his first live batting practice session. He was battling some elbow discomfort a couple weeks ago, and mechanics in his last bullpen session.


Todd Wellemeyer will take the mound and start against the Marlins. Mitchell Boggs is scheduled to follow with other pitchers to be determined. The game will start at 12:10 PM (CDT) and will be available through Florida's WAXY on MLB Gameday Audio.
