154 Cardinals Minor Leaguers Ready for Games

St. Louis Cardinals minor league pitchers and catchers arrived on March 9 and position players checked in on March 11. Four or five daily games begin on Thursday.

The St. Louis Cardinals' minor league clubhouse, recently vacated by the then-training Dominican Republic World Baseball Classic club, has now welcomed an even larger group.

Last week, 152 minor leaguers reported in Jupiter, Florida under camp coordinator Mike Shildt and a cadre of Cardinals coaches. Pitchers and catchers arrived on Monday, March 9, with their first workout the next day. Position players joined them on Wednesday, March 11. The listed players include 83 pitchers and 69 position players.

This group will be joined by other players when cut from major league camp, a count that could be as high as 19. In fact, the total in minor league camp jumped to 154 on Saturday when outfielder Nick Stavinoha and second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir were re-assigned there.

From that expanded population of about 170, slightly over 100 of them will be assigned to one of the four Cardinals full-season minor league clubs – Memphis (Triple-A), Springfield (Double-A), Palm Beach (A-Advanced) and Quad Cities (A) to begin the season.

Joining the remainder from this group that do make one of the above clubs will be a second wave of additional players from lower levels in the system that are scheduled to arrive in Jupiter on April 7 for Extended Spring Training.

One new name, left-handed pitcher Kristhiam Linares, was recently signed by the organization. My next report will mention why several expected names are missing from the above list.

Spring schedule updates

Back on January 25, I shared with you the St. Louis Cardinals minor league spring training game schedule. After a week of camp days, the first official contests begin on Thursday, March 19 and run through Friday, April 3.

At that time, the four full-season squads will be named and those remaining behind will join the next wave of recruits in extended spring training.

Since the earlier report, the Cardinals have added three more "fifth games". They include WFAST, the World Free Agent Spring Training club, on March 22, Gildea's Raiders on March 26 and the Long Island Storm on April 1. These are in addition to the six previously-scheduled fifth games against the Florida Marlins' minor leaguers.

Gildea's is a traveling team that regularly makes the rounds of Florida spring camps. They have visited the Cardinals yearly for the last decade. WFAST is a 17-day spring camp for free agents that offers instruction from independent league coaches and of course, game competition for young men looking for professional contracts.

The Long Island Storm field travel teams of various age groups from the Long Island and New York City area. They compete in various invitational leagues and tournaments nationwide. Former Cardinals Minor League Player of the Year Reid Gorecki, now in the Atlanta system, and his brother Ryan are among the Storm's instructional staff.
