Brendan Ryan on his DL Stint

St. Louis Cardinals infielder Brendan Ryan talks about his hamstring injury that placed him on the 15-day disabled list.

Brendan Ryan was just beginning to make his move to claim significant playing time with the 2009 Cardinals when he suffered a hamstring injury on Wednesday night in Atlanta running out what turned out to be a foul ball.

With starting shortstop Khalil Greene already out, the club placed Ryan on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday and promoted Tyler Greene for his first taste of big league action.

It was a familiar story.

To start the 2008 season, career minor leaguer Rico Washington made the team only because Ryan was on the DL with an oblique strain.

Ryan, frustrated at times during the following discussion, said he doesn't want to known as "the injury guy".

It is a fair question.

Ryan missed a month in 2005 while with Palm Beach due to a hamstring strain that was elongated when he tried to return too soon. In 2006, he played in just 28 regular season games due to a wrist injury. That makes 2007 the only injury-free season in his last five.

In the following audio clips, Ryan talks candidly about having played better recently, perhaps making a positive impression. Some disappointment creeps in along with greater frustration over the fact the injury occurred on a foul ball. He does expect to be ready to play sooner than 15 days.
