Left-handed starting pitcher Nick Additon left his last outing on May 19 after just two innings and has not appeared since. According to a club official, he "tweaked his arm" and was placed on the disabled list Monday due to "continued issues with his throwing arm".
On the season, the 21-year-old has posted a 2-2 record with a 3.09 ERA over nine games, including six starts. Originally taken in the 46th round of the 2006 draft, Additon has fanned 24 but issued 18 walks over 32 2/3 innings in 2009.
Joining Additon on the DL is right-handed reliever Shaun Garceau, who is dealing with the effects of influenza. The 21-year-old has appeared in 11 games, including four starts this season with an ERA of 6.23. Control continues to be a challenge as Garceau has walked 19 in 30 1/3 innings. Update: Garceau was officially added to the organization's suspended list.
One roster addition is the activation of second baseman/shortstop Oliver Marmol from the disabled list, where the 22-year-old has been all season to date. The right-handed hitter was officially placed on the DL back on April 14.
The other addition is also a demotion as right-handed reliever Elvis Hernandez was activated by the Double-A Springfield and immediately transferred to Palm Beach. The 24-year-old had been placed on the Springfield DL on May 2 with a strained left oblique.
"The Mosquito" appeared in 11 Texas League games, posting a 4.91 ERA. He fanned eight, but walked 14 in 14 2/3 innings. The Dominican Republic native spent the entire 2008 season in the Florida State League, where he has now returned.
