Games Played Monday, June 1st


Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) - Defeated the Cubs 6-2

Shortstop Tyler Greene and Brett Wallace both homered in Monday's contest against the Cubs. Greene's blast was a three-run homer to give the Redbirds enough offense to defeat the Cubs.

Starter Mitchell Boggs scattered nine hits and two walks over six solid innings, giving up only one run on the day to pick up his first Triple-A win on the year. Closer Jess Todd picked up his fifth save, retiring both of the batters he faced in the top of the ninth.

Springfield Cardinals (Double-A) - Lost to Corpus Christi 9-4

Springfield starter Lance Lynn suffered his first loss for the Cardinals after going 4-0 during the month of May. Yesterday Lynn didn't make it to the fifth inning, giving up seven earned runs through four innings on nine hits including, a home run and three walks.

Third baseman Donovan Solano hit his first home run for Springfield this season, a two run blast coming in the third, but Corpus Christi had already scored seven runs, including the six run first inning to put the game out of reach. Solano finished the day, going three for five, with three RBIs and a run scored.

Palm Beach Cardinals (High-A) - Lost to Lakeland 4-1

The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth, scoring their only run on the day coming off the bat of designated hitter Paul Vazquez, who hit his second home run on the season.

Starter Scott Gorgen deserved some run support, he head the Flying Tigers to just two runs, only one of them earned on two hits and two walks, while striking out nine, through seven & two-thirds innings. He was tagged with the loss, a tough one to take.

Quad Cities River Bandits (A) - Shutout by Burlington 4-0

Rain cut this game short as the River Bandits come up on short end of the stick, losing to Burlington 4-0. The Bandit have now lost 11 of their last 13 games to sink four games below the .500 mark and eight games out of first place.

Starter Brett Zawacki took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits over four innings of work.

Johnson City Cardinals (R) - The Cardinals will open the season on the road in Kingsport on Tuesday, June 23rd. The Cardinals will play a three game series with the Mets before the action comes to Howard Johnson Field on Friday, June 26th when the Cardinals play host to the Burlington Royals in the 2009 home opener.

Gulf Coast League Cardinals (R) - The GCL Cardinals open their season on June 23 vs. the GCL Marlins.

Minor League Pitcher of the Day - Mitchell Boggs

Boggs picked up his first win at Triple-A after giving up only one run in his six innings on the mound.



Minor League Player of the Day - Donovan Solano

In a losing cause for Springfield, Donovan went 3-for-5 to include his first home run on the season, driving in three runs and scoring another one.
