Instead, not only did the pitcher, reportedly 17-years-old, not get his bonus, but he is precluded from signing with any organization for a year. For more details on Franco from last summer, click this link.
Along with Franco, three other Dominican players also had their contracts voided after background checks identified irregularities on identity and/or age. They are pitchers Lenny Rosario and Eddy Rivera along with third baseman Bernardo Villar.
Villar's bonus was reportedly to have been in the low six figures, but like Franco's, was unpaid because his contract was never approved. Rosario pitched briefly in the Liga Paralela last fall.
None of the four currently remain as members of the Cardinals organization.
In other Cardinals Dominican news, first baseman Marcos Martinez has been released while catcher Yorbel Alcala has been reassigned to the Dominican Summer League from Extended Spring Training. Pitcher Edouard Estalis will only be on the Dominican Summer League roster if he cannot resolve an outstanding visa issue. Otherwise, he will begin in the Gulf Coast League.
Over at "The Cardinal Nation", the organizational roster matrix has been updated to include the 2009 DSL team. Our Scout.com DSL roster will be updated shortly also, with links to each player's profile page.
