The Cardinals Major League Notebook 06/08

The Cardinals have been lambasted to the tune of 28-7 by the Colorado Rockies in the first three games of a four-game series at Busch Stadium.

"It's a tough time," said manager Tony La Russa. Speaking of his players, he said, "Just don't throw your hands up and, whatever you do, don't get depressed."

For the third game in a row a Cardinals pitcher who had won five games failed to get a sixth win. Right-hander Joel Pineiro was touched for 10 hits, all singles, in five innings.

"I got singled to death," said Pineiro. "One of those days that a lot of balls found the holes. Not much you can do."

The Cardinals went 0-for-4 with men in scoring position and are 1-for-15 for the series and 6-for-50 in the first seven games of an eight-game home stand.

ROCKIES 7, CARDINALS 2: The Cardinals took their first lead of the series on a rare, two-run sacrifice fly by 1B Albert Pujols in the first inning. But RHP Joel Pineiro, who held a 2-1 lead into the sixth, then allowed four straight singles and was removed from the game. RHP Kyle McClellan was raked for the final four runs in the eighth.
