Interview: Batavia Manager Mark DeJohn

The manager of the defending New York-Penn League champions discusses his 2009 charges and more in this exclusive audio interview.

Each year, the roster of the Batavia Muckdogs of the short-season New York-Penn League is manned by a combination of returning youngsters and June draftees, primarily from college programs.

The man assigned by the St. Louis Cardinals organization to take the lead role in turning these youths from disparate backgrounds into a winning team is Mark DeJohn. The former MLB infielder and ex-St. Louis coach loves his work. He is also good at it, as evidenced by his club's 2008 NY-Penn League championship and second George Kissell Award from the Cardinals for excellence in player development.

On Wednesday, even as he was battling a nasty cough, the man simply known as "DJ" was kind enough to give me a block of his time to discuss his 2009 team as well as some of the infield standouts he tutored at Extended Spring Training.
