Holliday on Day One as a St. Louis Cardinal

Matt Holliday speaks after his four-hit St. Louis debut in Philly Friday night, tying his career high.

The newest Cardinal, outfielder Matt Holliday, acquired earlier in the day from the Oakland A's made his St. Louis debut a memorable one. The 29-year-old started in left field and went 4-for-5 with a double, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base.

The four hits tied a career high. It was his 15th career four-hit game and third of this season. The first two were on May 19 at Detroit and this Monday, July 20 at Minnesota.

On Phillies starter J.A. Happ:

"I didn't know much about him. He's a good pitcher. We got some fastballs to hit. We got some bleeders and got to bleed on him a little bit. Rick (Ankiel) had a big hit and we found a way to score some runs."

On being a Cardinal:

"It's nice. I feel it is a blessing to be here. To be able to contribute and get some hits, get on the bases and play well."

On the St. Louis order compared to Oakland:

"Obviously you've got different guys around you. In Oakland we have some injuries and things… I think this is a very good lineup. I am not going to talk about the Oakland lineup. I think this is going to be a very good lineup. There are a lot of good hitters in it."

On what was behind his second inning stolen base:

"They told me I had the green light on that one so went with the first move by the lefty. It's part of my game, something I like to do. Especially with no outs and you can get to second. Get a guy over and with a fly ball, you can score a run that way. I pride myself on playing good baseball. Even when I am not swinging the bat great, I try to find a way to help the team win."

On if he could ever have guessed yesterday that he would be playing today in Philly getting four hits:

"I would have told them it was hard to believe. Obviously, I had heard there was a chance that I might get traded here. Like I said, I feel very blessed to be here and part of the Cardinals organization. I am thankful."

On whether or not he was noticed on the train from New York:

"No, it was a pretty low-key ride over."

On whether he has checked into his hotel:

"No. My wife… they dropped me off here – my wife and kids."

On the opponent:

"They have been playing very well, the Phillies, and I think that pitcher was undefeated. Wasn't he something like 7-0? (ed. he was). He's good. We got some jamb shots on him but we found a way to score and beat him."

On having four hits:

"I was lucky. A couple of them were plain old luck. But I will take them. I will take them all because there are times when you are going to line out, hit balls hard that get caught. It is effective. It may not be pretty, but it was effective.

"It feels good whether they were all crushes or not. When you're able to contribute to a win and play out there and be able to help, it's a good feeling."
