The NYPL All-Star Game will be held next Tuesday, August 18 at the home of the State College Spikes. Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on the campus of Penn State University was the home of the Cardinals' league affiliate in 2006.
The 21-year-old Ahmady has played all over the infield for the Muckdogs, including working out behind the plate. His current line is .315/.399/.430 including two home runs and 24 RBI. The right-handed hitter was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 11th round of the 2009 draft from Fresno State.
De La Cruz, 20, is struggling with the bat this season, having posted a .229/.270/.284 line in 109 at-bats over 32 games with the Muckdogs this season. Defensively, he has gunned down 34 percent of attempted base stealers. The right-handed hitter from the Dominican Republic only played 34 games last season with Quad Cities due to a wrist injury.
Maertz, the Cardinals' 44th round pick in 2008, has a 1.21 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old right-hander has held opponents to a collective .130 batting average this season.
The three players selected from the defending league champions compares to six last season. They were pitchers Arquimedes Nieto and Adam Reifer, infielders Colt Sedbrook and Jermaine Curtis and outfielders Frederick Parejo and Shane Peterson. In 2007, first baseman Andrew Brown and pitchers Jess Todd and Josh Dew made the squad.
