Scout Cards Minors Pitcher of the Month: Aug.

The Springfield Cardinals right-handed reliever Eduardo Sanchez is our Minor League Pitcher of the Month.

Eduardo Sanchez has to be considered the breakout prospect this season in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system. He has burst on the scene with a devastating fastball that touches 98 MPH and a filthy breaking ball. Only 20-years-old and in Double-A, Sanchez pushed Francisco Samuel aside and took over as the Springfield closer.

During the month of August, he has been especially dominating. In 15 innings, he has logged 19 strikeouts and picked up six saves along the way. In 10 of his 12 outings in August, his opponents failed to score upon the native Venezuelan. During the month, the opposition is hitting only .208 against him.

Though his walks have been slightly elevated this month, he has minimized the damage with an astounding 5.25-to-1 groundball-to-fly ball ratio. During this time as well, he has put himself in the discussion for a possible role in this season's big league bullpen.

The Cardinals originally signed Sanchez as a non-drafted free agent in 2005.

Congratulations to Eduardo Sanchez, our Minor League Reliever of the Month for August.
