Winter Ball News

The Tigres de Aragua of the Venezuelan League are expecting Jose Martinez in camp when it opens September 24.  We will have to see if he participates.  The second baseman has been through a very tough time the past few years due to injuries, birth of a child, and loss of a close family member in a horrible crime and did not play in the 2009 regular season as a result.

Estrellas Orientales of the Dominican League sent out camp invitations for the 2009-10 season to Francisco Samuel, Joel Pichardo, Tony Cruz, former Cardinal Kelvin Jimenez, and many more.  Samuel was listed on the preventive list from playing this winter due to injuries, but it is up to him on whether he participates or not.  Cruz would have played last season but the Cardinals placed him in the Hawaii Winter League instead.

A brand new independent league is opening this coming fall/winter called the Florida Winter League (FWBL).  Ken Griffey, Sr. is the commissioner and Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez is a member of the ownership team.  The A-level league consists of four teams (Miami Diamantes, Lake County Black Bears, Space Coast Surge, and Seminole County Naturals) and begins play October 30, running through late January.  The Florida-based league becomes an interesting addition to the winter schedule after the loss of the Hawaii Winter League and several teams pulling out of Fall Instructional Leagues.
