Our daily reports on Cardinals prospects in winter ball continue as Jon Jay, Fernando Salas, Mark Hamilton and Jaime Garcia are among the players in the news.

Mexican Pacific League

Fernando Salas (Memphis-Hermosillo) entered in the sixth and pitched to one batter.  He got the batter to ground out, but allowed one inherited runner to score with the bases loaded.

Cardinals VP of Scouting and Player Development Jeff Luhnow visited with Mike Claiborne on the Sunday morning KTRS 550 AM show and confirmed that Jaime Garcia (Memphis) will not be pitching this winter.  Luhnow said Garcia has been shut down and will begin his ramp up and training sometime in December.  The reason for his shut down was due to his rigorous rehab (from Tommy John surgery) schedule this past season with Derek Lilliquist at the Jupiter, FL complex.

Jon Jay (Memphis-Caracas) started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run.

Frederick Parejo (Quad Cities-Aragua) started in right field and batted eighth.  1-for-2 with one double and one strikeout.

Jose Garcia (Palm Beach-Aragua) started at shortstop and batted ninth.  2-for-3 with one double, two two-out RBIs, one sacrifice, and assisted in one double play.

Domnit Bolivar (Quad Cities-Aragua) managed to crack the roster, but did not play Sunday.

Dominican League (October 16)

Last week I exchanged messages with ESPN Deportes' Jorge Arangure on the status of Cuban defectors Yadel Marti and Yasser Gomez.  He said that both will be players to watch this winter and organizations are waiting on both to put work in before they start the bidding.  He also said that both could contribute to a major league club in 2010.  Marti is pitching for Tigres del Licey and Gomez is playing the outfield for Estrellas Orientales.  We will keep an eye on Marti and Gomez in the daily reports.

I also asked him on what he thought of Amaury Cazana (Memphis-Licey), whether he is a career minor leaguer or if he has a chance at a major league spot.  Arangure said "Considering that he's older than I am, I'd say he's a career minor leaguer."

On the Sunday KTRS show, Luhnow also commented on Mark Hamilton (Memphis), who will be playing for Gigantes del Cibao.  Luhnow said that Hamilton took it upon himself to request time in the outfield this winter.  If things pan out for Hamilton in the Dominican, I wouldn't put it past the organization to have him in the major league camp this coming spring.

Venezuelan Parallel League (2nd Week of October)

I chatted with Moises Colorado (VSL) on Sunday and he confirmed that he was in Tigres de Aragua training camp for tryouts.  He was cut and has now joined the St. Louis Cardinals squad for Parallel League play which begins sometime in the next week.  The players listed in the October 4th Cardinals Winter Ball Preview who did not make the Venezuelan League rosters are all most likely headed to the Parallel League.

Colombian League (October 23)
