Cardinals Winter Leagues Notebook: 10/17/09

Our daily reports on Cards prospects in winter ball continue. Daniel Descalso is the Player of the Day.

Arizona Fall League

 

Daniel Descalso (Memphis) started at second base and batted second.  3-for-5 with one run and assisted in two double plays.

Tyler Henley (Springfield) started in left field and batted eighth. 0-for-4 with one run and two strikeouts.

Gary Daley (Springfield) entered in the seventh and pitched two innings.  He allowed three hits, one earned run, threw one wild pitch, and struck out one for the hold (1). (p-s:31-22)(g/f:4-1)

 

Surprise beat Mesa 7-3

Mike Parisi (Memphis) is scheduled to start for Surprise.

 

 

Mexican Pacific League

 

Iker Franco (Former Springfield-Obregon) started as designated hitter and batted fourth.  0-for-4 with one strikeout and grounded into one double play.

Venezuelan League

 

Jose Garcia (Springfield-Aragua) started at shortstop and batted leadoff.  2-for-4 with one strikeout.

Jon Jay (Memphis-Caracas) started in centerfield and batted leadoff.  0-for-3 with one run, two hit by pitches, and one strikeout.

Orber Moreno (Former Memphis-Caracas) entered in the sixth and pitched one inning.  He struck out one and got the other two batters faced to ground out. (p-s:14-10)

 

Caracas beat Lara 10-7

Dennis Abreu (Former Tennessee-Margarita) started at first base and batted sixth.  2-for-4 with two RBIs (one w/two-outs) and one strikeout.

Venezuelan Parallel League

 

ALB Orkas were a European based team (with Venezuelan fill-in players) that played in the league last season and will not participate this year.  The league will only allow players who are affiliated with MLB teams to play: Mister-Baseball

 

 

Dominican League

 

Fernando Tatis (Former St. Louis-Estrellas) started in right field and batted third.  1-for-3 with one run, one hit by pitch, and one strikeout.

Juan Richardson (Former Springfield-Estrellas) started at third base and batted fifth.  0-for-3 with one walk and one strikeout.

Josh Pressley (Former Springfield-Estrellas) started as designated hitter and batted sixth.  1-for-3 with one two-out RBI.

Yasser Gomez (Cuban Free Agent-Estrellas) started in centerfield and batted eighth.  0-for-3 with one walk.


Azucareros beat Estrellas 4-2

Hector Luna (Former St. Louis-Aguilas) started at third base and batted fifth.  2-for-4 with one double, one RBI, one run, and one strikeout.

D'Angelo Jimenez (Former Memphis-Licey) started at third base and batted third.  0-for-2 with two runs, three walks, and one stolen base.

Oneli Perez (Memphis free agent-Licey) entered in the ninth and pitched one inning.  He allowed two hits, one earned run, and one home run.  (g/f:1-2)

 

Al Reyes (Former St. Louis-Escogido) entered in the ninth and pitched one inning.  He allowed two hits, one earned run, and one walk. (g/f:2-1)

 

Licey beat Escogido 6-3

I spoke with Hector Cardenas (Quad Cities) Friday night and he told me that he did not make the Gigantes team and will be pitching in the Dominican Instructional League for the St. Louis Cardinals.  Cardenas also said that Miguel Tapia (Quad Cities), Elvis Hernandez (Palm Beach), and Osvaldo Morales (Palm Beach) along with himself are listed as reserves waiting for a call.  He said that Morales was a very late cut. 

 

 

Colombian League (October 23)

 

The Caimanes de Barranquilla will present their team on October 20: Team Renteria

 

Mark Shorey (Memphis), Chris Swauger (Palm Beach), and Adron Chambers (Palm Beach) arrived in Colombia on Friday and will begin training with Barranquilla Saturday: El Heraldo

 

 

Nicaraguan Baseball Federation

 

Major League Baseball donated spikes and various other equipment to the country: La Prensa

 

 

International Market Place

 

Kiley McDaniel of Baseball Prospectus posted video from the Dominican showcase that is taking place this weekend.  The players featured are Wagner Mateo, Edward Salcedo, Estailon Peguero, and Luis Jolly.  Be sure to stop by his video site and check out his twitter account as he sends updates.  He said that Mateo has been receiving a lot of interest from teams and could sign for somewhere in the one million dollar range.
