Cardinals Winter Leagues Notebook: 10/22/09

Tyler Henley is the Player of the Day in our daily report on Cardinals prospects in winter ball.

Arizona Fall League

 

Daryl Jones (Springfield) started in centerfield and batted second.  1-for-1 with one home run, one RBI, two runs, three walks, one hit by pitch, and two stolen bases.

Tyler Henley (Springfield) started in leftfield and batted seventh.  2-for-4 with one double, one home run, three RBIs, two runs, one walk, and one strikeout.

Bryan Anderson (Memphis) started as catcher and batted eighth.  2-for-4 with one triple, two RBIs (one w/two-outs), and allowed two stolen bases.

Scott Gorgen (Springfield) entered in the sixth and pitched one inning. He allowed two hits, one earned run, one home run, and struck out two. (p-s:22-14)(g/f:0-1)

Adam Reifer (Palm Beach) entered in the ninth and pitched one inning.  He allowed three hits, three earned runs, one home run, one walk, and struck out one. (p-s:39-22)(g/f:0-2)

Timo Perez (Former St. Louis-Licey) started in left field and batted third.  0-for-4 at the plate.

Amaury Cazana (Memphis-Licey) started as designated hitter and batted fourth.  1-for-4 with one double and one run.

D'Angelo Jimenez (Former Memphis-Licey) started at third base and batted seventh.  0-for-3 with one RBI and one fielding error.

Oneli Perez (Memphis Free Agent-Licey) entered in the ninth and pitched one inning.  He allowed no hits or runs, one walk, and struck out one for the save (2). (g/f:1-1)

 

Licey beat Gigantes 4-1

Fernando Tatis (Former St. Louis-Estrellas) started as designated hitter and batted third.  1-for-4 with one stolen base and two strikeouts.

Josh Pressley (Former Springfield-Estrellas) started at first base and batted seventh.  0-for-4 with one strikeout and assisted in one double play.

Yasser Gomez (Cuban Free Agent-Estrellas) started in right field and batted eighth.  1-for-4 with one strikeout.

 

Hector Luna (Former St Louis-Aguilas) started at third base and batted third.  1-for-5 with one RBI and one run.

Florida Winter Baseball League (October 30)

 

Orlando Hernandez, who is a minority owner of the Florida Winter Baseball League, has received three offers to pitch this winter.  Leones del Ponce of the Puerto Rican League, Bravos de Margarita of the Venezuelan League, and Tigres del Licey of the Dominican League have all reached out to the former New York Yankee.  Hernandez is currently training in Miami, FL in preparation for a chance to pitch in the big leagues next season. Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman has arrived in New York to have talks with various general managers on employment for the 2010 season: ESPN

 

Wagner Mateo is nearing a deal with the San Francisco Giants.  As many should remember, the Cardinals outbid the Giants at the last minute this past July, before the team backed out of the deal. The New York Yankees were also rumored to have strong interest in Mateo.

 

Minnesota Twins' prospect Miguel Angel Sano has been cleared and received his visa to travel to the United States: Minnesota Twins Official Site

 

The Atlanta Braves have signed left-handed pitcher Elvin Garcia out of Nicaragua to a $20,000 minor league deal.  He pitched for Esteli in the Nicaraguan Prospect League allowing 18 hits, six runs (one earned), four walks, and striking out 12 over 21.2 innings with a 2-1 record: La Prensa and El Nuevo Diario
