Luhnow on the Cardinals System: Part Two

The St. Louis Cardinals farm director covers a variety of subjects in the second of four interviews. Segment two includes Jeff Luhnow's take on Dave Duncan's remarks about organizational pitching instruction, minor league coaching changes, minor league free agents and more.

Here in Part two of our exclusive interview with St. Louis Cardinals Vice President of Scouting and Player Development Jeff Luhnow, the organization's farm director addresses a number of pithy topics.

We begin with reaction over the remarks by Dave Duncan about minor league pitching instruction and how they will be addressed. The farm director believes Duncan would be on board if he had time to see the teaching being done in the minors and sees the problems as more of a communications issue.

Luhnow breaks down the coaching changes across levels and thought process behind moving instructors. He drills into the top pitching coach changes, Derek Lilliquist and Dennis Martinez, in detail.

The importance of creating winning expectations as players come up through the system was highlighted. Attempts to re-sign two of nine minor league free agents, Evan MacLane and Oneli Perez, were introduced.

The organization will look to sign other left-handed free agent pitchers assuming Charlie Manning and Ian Ostlund are leaving. We closed with a review of the three left-handers that competed in the AFL last year, including one that has a very good shot at being added to the 40-man roster in advance of the Rule 5 draft.
