Cardinals Winter Leagues Notebook: 02/02/10

Donovan Solano's batting order recommendation led to Colombian playoff MVP award for Mark Shorey. Caribbean Series play begins Tuesday.

Colombian League


Saturday's Results:


Javier Colina (Former Memphis-Monteria) started at shortstop and batted third.  1-for-4 at the plate.


Adron Chambers (Palm Beach-Barranquilla) started in left field and batted leadoff.  1-for-5 with one double, one RBI, one run, and one strikeout.

Donovan Solano (Memphis-Barranquilla) started at shortstop and batted second.  2-for-5 with one double, one triple, one RBI, one run, and one strikeout.

Mark Shorey (Memphis-Barranquilla) started in right field and batted fifth.  2-for-4 with one double, three RBIs, one hit by pitch, and one strikeout.

Chris Swauger (Palm Beach-Barranquilla) started at first base and batted sixth.  2-for-4 with one run and one walk.


Barranquilla beat Monteria 9-1


Barranquilla manager Boris Villa talks about how he had trouble making up the lineup the night before.  One of his problems was where to place Mark Shorey (Memphis), due to past struggles the Cardinals prospect outfielder was moved from the third to the seventh spot in the lineup.  Villa was considering Shorey for the fifth spot when Donovan Solano (Memphis) recommended putting him there.  Villa did so and Shorey earned the MVP for the finals: El Heraldo (bottom article)



Caribbean Series


Mayaguez announced it will bring along 12 reinforcements including Armando Rios (Former Memphis-Carolina) and Bill Pulsipher (Former St. Louis-Arecibo). Pete Parise (Memphis-Ponce) will remain with the team in the Caribean Series, Antonio DeJesus (Springfield) was not added to the roster.  Mike Maroth (Former St. Louis) will head home to prepare for Minnesota Twins spring camp.  Caribbean Series Official Site


Nerio Rodriguez (Former St. Louis), Abraham Nunez (Former St. Louis), Danilo Sanchez (Former Springfield), and Julio Manon (Former Johnson City) will accompany Escogido for the series.


Fernando Salas (Memphis) is listed on the Hermosillo roster.


Orber Moreno (Former Memphis) is listed on the Caracas roster.


Francisco Liriano (Escogido), Gregor Blanco (Caracas), Gustavo Chacin (Caracas), Jose Vargas (Hermosillo), and Bernie Castro (Mayaguez) will not be joining their respective teams in the Caribbean Series: Listin Diario

Nicargauan National Championship


Edgard Montiel (Former DSL) is projected to be the starting left fielder for Managua Boer when the season opens on Feb. 5th: La Prensa


Group A will feature the teams of Granada, Rivas, Leon, Chinandega, Jinotega, Contales, and Las Segovias.

Group B will feature Esteli, Managua, Costa Caribe, Matagalpa, Carazo, and Boaco.

I am unsure at this time whether Jem Argenal (VSL) and Johnny Polanco (VSL) will participate for the short time before the 2010 VSL season opens.  Walter Santos (Former DSL) also participated in the league last season but missed the final months of the 2009 year due to arm troubles.



Spring Camp


Francisco Valdivia (Mariners) says he is recovered and ready to prove he was worth the signing bonus he signed for last season: La Prensa


Erasmo Ramirez (Mariners) dominated the VSL in 2009 and earned himself an invite to minor league camp for 2010: La Prensa


The U.S. granted work visas to Rangers prospects Omar Beltre and Alexi Ogando after being denied entrance since 2005.  Both had been involved in a marriage fraud scandal in the Dominican that affected nearly 30 weddings.  Both players have been left to play in the DSL the last four years and are expected to be in big league camp this spring.  ESPN Deportes
