Cardinals Winter Leagues Notebook: 02/04/10

In the Caribbean Series, old friend Jason Simontacchi got the start for Venezuela on Wednesday.

Pablo Ozuna (Former Peoria-Escogido) started at second base and batted ninth.  2-for-4 with one run, one strikeout, and grounded into one double play.

Note: I had missed all winter long that Ozuna played for Estrellas in the Dominican League.


Jason Simontacchi (Former St. Louis-Caracas) started and pitched 4.2 innings.  He allowed eight hits, two runs (one earned), one home run, and struck out five. (p-s:69-48)(g/f:5-3)

Orber Moreno (Former Memphis-Caracas) entered in the ninth and pitched one inning.  He allowed one hit and no runs for the save (1).  (p-s:13-10)(g/f:1-2)


Armando Rios (Former Memphis-Mayaguez) started in left field and batted third.  1-for-4 with two strikeouts, one outfield assist, and assisted in one double play.

Nerio Rodriguez (Former St. Louis-Escogido) is scheduled to start Thursday and has been dealing with the flu for a week.  Raul Valdes and Julio Manon (Former Johnson City-Escogido) still have not joined the team: Listin Diario


Bill Pulsipher (Former St. Louis-Mayaguez) is set to pitch for Mayaguez on Thursday: Primera Hora


Thursday's Games:

Hermosillo (Mexico, 1-1) visits Mayaguez (Puerto Rico, 0-2) @ 3:30 PM

Caracas (Venezuela, 1-1) visits Escogido (Dominican, 2-0) @ 7:30 PM



International Market Place


New York Yankees scout Carlos Levy visited Nicaragua for a workout of prospects.  He said there is no one at this time that catches his attention (maybe 15+ that stick out) but will visit later on to re-evaluate the crop: La Prensa


The Houston Astros signed 18-year old first baseman/outfielder Meshach Laguna who had been playing for Chinandega in the Nicaraguan Winter League.  He played in 21 games going 5-for-29 (.172) with three doubles, three RBIs, six runs, two strikeouts, and committed two errors.  El Nuevo Diario


A rumor coming from the Taiwan Baseball Blogspot says that the Cardinals are sending scout Matt Slater to check out RHP Hao-Chun Chiu and LHP Chi-Hung Hsu.  Nothing is confirmed yet.
