Cuban-born first baseman Jose Julio Ruiz had a private workout with the Texas Rangers.  Cuban free agent shortstop Yadil Mujica worked out for the Seattle Mariners.  Cuban Ball Players


The Boston Red Sox' president said that the team is nearing a deal with Cuban pitcher Yuniesky Maya and have serious interest in signing Ruiz.  Terreno de Pelota


ESPN's Jorge Arangure breaks down and compares Ruiz and fellow Cuban free agent Leslie Anderson, who are both considered major league-ready.  The New York Yankees were one of the teams rumored to be at Anderson's workout in Mexico on Friday.  ESPN


Ruiz' agents think that he could sign any time in the next week.  The Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Rays, and Colorado Rockies have shown the most interest and the agents are expecting the New York Yankees to possibly make an offer.  El Nuevo Herald


The Dominican Prospect League announced right-handed pitcher Michael Feliz and outfielder Roberto Rosario as the league's January 2010 Pitcher and Player of the Month: DPL Official Site


The Pensacola Pelicans of the independent American Association signed Marcos Rodriguez (Former Palm Beach) to a contract for the 2010 season.  Rodriguez played for Caribes in the Venezuelan League this past winter.


Miguel Negron (Former St. Louis Spring Invite), who was suspended for the first 50-games of the season, will play in the Puerto Rican Double-A League.  The suspension does not carry over to the league since it is not MLB affiliated.  Negron's current contract is under the control of the Chicago White Sox organization.  Juan Gonzalez (Former St. Louis Spring Invite)  also received clearance and was assigned to Melao Melao de Vega Bajo.  Primera Hora


Orber Moreno (Former Memphis) signed a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox, but there is no invite to MLB spring camp.  Moreno was one of the many faces that helped lead Caracas to the Venezuelan League Championship and Caribbean Series.


The New York Yankees are expected to be a serious bidder for Cuban shortstop Adeiny Hechevarria: NY Post


The Los Angeles Angels are one of a half-dozen teams scouting Hechevarria.  ESPN's Arangure points out that Hechevarria is still on the blocked list and hasn't been granted free agency by MLB.  Arangure believes that Hechevarria should get a bigger contract then the Boston Red Sox's Jose Iglesias but warned his OPS was low last season.


The Atlanta Braves signed 21-year old Nicaraguan shortstop Ivan Marin.  Marin played for Granada in the Nicaraguan Winter League and is currently manning shortstop for the same team in the Nicaraguan National Championship.  La Prensa

Andy Cavazos (Former St. Louis) is trying out for Dorados de Chinuahua in the Triple-A Mexican League.  He pitched for Guasave in the Mexican Pacific League over the winter.  The team also said that if Orber Moreno can not make the Triple-A Chicago White Sox staff, he will pitch for Chinuahua during the summer.  MiLB Official Site


The St. Louis Cardinals have ten players that are affiliated with Caribes in the Venezuelan League.  Those players are as follows: Orlando Munoz (GCL), Fernando Cedeno (VSL), Roberto Espinoza (Quad Cities), Kevin Moscatel (GCL), Pedro Rodriguez (MiLB Signing), Cesar Valera (GCL), Ildemaro Vargas (VSL), Roberto Perez (VSL), and Ronnierd Garcia (MiLB Signing).  Comandante del Beisbol

Rangers pitchers Omar Beltre and Alexi Ogando received their visas and will be in MLB spring camp next week.  Both were banned from the U.S. after being caught in a wedding scandal in the Dominican.  Rangers Official Site


Cuban defectors Ramon Cairoz and Maikel Pineiro plan on taking different paths to the majors.  Pitcher Cairoz is waiting to get clearance from the Office of Foreign Assets Control in order to be ruled a free agent.  Catcher Pineiro may wait until the 2010 MLB draft, unless a big offer comes to the table.  Cuban Ball Players
