Cardinals Make Second Cuts of Spring

The St. Louis Cardinals optioned out six players to their minor league camp following Monday's game.

The St. Louis Cardinals enacted their second set of cuts this spring on Monday, optioning out six players, including catcher Bryan Anderson, first baseman Mark Hamilton, outfielders Daryl Jones and Shane Robinson and pitchers Tyler Norrick and Francisco Samuel. All six are on the club's 40-man roster.

After the traditional day off to move from one clubhouse to the other, they will join the over 150 others working out in minor league camp. Initial intrasquad games are Wednesday with the first external competition scheduled Thursday.

Anderson had a very quiet camp with just one at-bat all spring, an unsuccessful pinch-hitting attempt. Hamilton went 3-for-8, including a pair of doubles. He scored twice and drew four walks. Hamilton was 2-for-3 as a pinch-hitter.

Jones, the organization's 2008 Player of the Year, had a double in five official at-bats, but was also hit by pitches twice and collected three RBI. Jones committed one error in the outfield. Robinson, who made his MLB debut in 2009, went 4-for-11 this spring including a pair of doubles and three RBI. He was also hit by three pitches and drew two walks.

In his only "A" game on the 8th against Boston, Norrick tossed two hitless shutout innings, while walking two. Next time out was not so nice. In the "B" game on Saturday, he issued four free passes while getting just one out. Samuel was spanked by the Mets for six runs in his debut on the 4th and walked a total of seven batters in 2 2/3 spring innings.
